I made it out on the ice today. I showed 41 at the house for a high. It was foggy at day light and the road was greasy at 28 degrees. About 0930 the for burned off and it was nice out. The wind was only 15-25, so for us that is right next to slack. Two of us went and we caught five pie each. The biggest about 8 lbs and about a 5 -6 lb average.

That would be a good day MJM.

ADC you should come up and we will go. The spring is a good time to get a 20+ pound fish. We were fishing today, but we could go spearing too.
Snowy I eat my share of pike and I have nothing against them. They are fun to spear if you get where there is fish. Here are some speared pike a couple years ago. the 2 are 20+ pounds. The one had a lip tag.

Proper respect for that beard my man!!! I make some fine patties from pike, If you would like the recipe I would gladly share it... them are nice pike!!!

The dang blue haired, nose ring wearing liberals have even corrupted the pike now.

Good point. I guess I’d say “close” in the context I was thinking would be like 30 miles. But realistically I doubt anyone in our county which has 81 lakes has caught 5 or more 5+lb Northerns in a day all winter. It’s possible, but boy it won’t happen often even for the best. Granted, our area is nothing like central, North Central, or west central MN! Happy trapping! ScottW

Only a few pike for me.
There are some big though.

I really like the relative weight on those pike. They look great. There must be plenty of prey fish to eat.

We have few pike around me. I used to catch pickerel in Connecticut. They were built like sticks, I imagine similar to the hammer handle pike I have heard about. We are finally starting to get decent numbers of fair sized muskellunge, due to state stocking. My friend Stan usually catches and releases a lot of big muskies in February and March at CJ Brown.

Last September, Diane and I went to the nearby London, Ohio hatchery. They had thousands of 11" muskellunge they were going to start netting and delivering the next week. They grow them out on fathead minnows.

Diane loved feeding the trout there. The hatchery leave buckets of fish pellets, with a scoop near the trout ponds and raceways. You can feed them as much as you want. Thousands of large trout pushing each other out of the crystal clear water, fighting for the pellets, is an entertaining sight.
