When we bought our farm which had been in the family for close to 100 years, one neighbor started complaining that we were cutting up dead trees on what she said was their farm. I met with them and explained I was fairly certain where the line was but her husband who was not from here kept insisting that we were on the land. This went on for 2 years and I finally had enough when the lady chewed out my youngest son as he came out with a load of wood. I told them I was ordering a survey and we were putting up a fence on the line wherever it fell. The survey showed the fence was off giving them ground in places and me in others. I paid for the survey and fence and sent them a bill for half. They never paid and now trying to sell their farm with a Lien I have against it for their half per the law. I hated to do it but couldn’t tolerate that kind of behavior.

Im Indiana the fence law is you meet facing each other in the middle and each person is responsible for the fence on there right and responsible to pay for it. But probably does not happen often.

I will tell you if a neighbor wants to put a barb wire fence on the border of mine. There is no way in **** I'm paying for something he wants. I never heard of such a thing. His fence he pays for it and he can maintain it I'm not involved. That would never happen in my neck of the woods.

In Iowa I believe it’s to your left as your shaking with your right, here in Iowa that law was brought about when most people had some sort of livestock on ground with shared fence it usually only comes up now when people don’t like each other.

On the flip side, the neighbor on the back side brought in a logging crew, they dropped trees across the existing fence and destroyed it. Survey showed the fence wasn’t the line and they had harvested multiple white oaks off my property. I just asked that he replace the fence on the line at his expense and we moved on.

I just had a neighbor tear down a portion of my fence I was instructed to put up by my attorney. He had cut his drive way over on to our land. Got the sheriff out to look at it. Was told to go to mastristate. She told me to get pics of them and then tresspass them. Property laws are weak in NC. I have to spend money to protect what is ours.

I'm pretty sure in Ohio if both are running livestock, the cost is split between you. If the neighbor isn't, I pay for the fence. That seems fair , at least to me.

Think the law here in Illinois changed due to alot of people buying land for hunting purposes and not having cattle.if you don't have cattle on your property you do not need to maintain your half of the fence between properties.facing the line fence between properties you take care of the half on your right and they take care of there half on there right is how the law used to be.weve had some disputes in out township over the last 5 years 1 guy is a retired farmer that doesn't run cattle in his pasture anymore and didnt want to keep his part of the fence up anymore.
