Watched it tonight with nova,,, Although she, like the rest of us who saw it were saddened by old yellers fate. Remarkably she understood why. Most 8 year olds would not understand. She did say though, after the movie was over,, that hopefully we wouldn’t have to shoot sissy, her beagle dog and best buddy. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/02/full-4200-285669-img_0089.jpeg)

Thank you for sharing, John. What a wise little beauty, and her side kick. That picture needs to be framed, for sure. Charlie

That was the first movie I can remember mom taking us to see. It was at the drive in. Had to be around mid 70s.

Every kid should have a good dog. Gwitchen, your dog sounded like he was a lot of fun. I don’t remember the first time I saw ol yeller,, but the words that fess Parker says in the end has a mouthful of truth. “ sometimes life will come up out of nowhere and knock a man flat, hit him so hard his insides feel like they are gonna burst, but ya gotta get back up, and go on being a man , try looking for the good in things, chances are, you’ll find it”

If the your kids/grandkids like the movie, I suggest reading the book with them. My 7 and 9yr old loved the book, especially Arlis and his shenanigans. There’s also a sequel to the movie that’s pretty good. Old Yeller was the first movie I remember going to the local show house to see. Savage Sam was the sequel.

Don't forget where the red fern grows. Angela, I’m not sure if you saw the remake of it,,, wayyy better than the original ( which missed a lot of the original book). The remake was closer to the book. Which in my opinion,, should be the top 10 best books of all time. I still remember it…especially the part about Sammie the cat… having his paws wrapped with bandages soaked in turpentine because he always found Billy Coleman’s coon traps.( before Billy got lil Ann and Dan) I’ll definitely watch it with her… but I’ll wait a little bit. I don’t want to overdo it.

I have seen the remake, but I far prefer the original movie.
