I was talking with someone who is roughly 40yo.

He had never heard of pop starting a car with a stick shift by pushing it , jumping in and popping the clutch. The look of disbelief that you could start a car with a completely dead battery. He had never heard of starting a car that way.

I have done this countless times and pushed cars for friends to get them started.

With the average age on here , I bet A LOT of the people on here have done this.

Reply to this post if you know this skill , please. Would be interesting what percentage we have as a group.

Done it with a few of my early cars and trucks. Helped push a good number so they could be bump started to get home. I have hand-propped airboat engines also. Never really was a motorcycle guy but did own a 1985 ATC 250 R that it would bump from a hill to start it, occasionally, instead of kicking it over.

Well since it has been almost impossible to get a standard transmission in 10 or more years it really isnt too surpising.

I had a '76 Yamaha DT175 , kick start only. Just swapped out the engine with another used engine. Kicked , kicked , kicked it. No luck . Finally got a buddy to tow me with his bike using a rope , got it started then.

Yup, only 36 and done it more times than I can count. Pickups, cars, lots of antique tractors, and semis a few times as long as the had enough air to release the brakes

Done it lots of time. Usta' park John Deere A and B tractors on a hill to give them a rolling start and then push in the hand clutch too.

Most can't drive a stick let alone know how to pop start one, lol.

I had a car for my daughter to run when she got her license 15 years ago that was a stick. She was pretty good with it so that was her car when she got her license.
After a couple years decided to get her another car because that one was getting iffy. My cuz had a good used one cheap but was an automatic and she didn't want it because of that.

I asked why, and she said because none of her friends can drive a stick so they don't ask to drive her car, lol.

There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.

My mother drove a 58 Rambler Wagon everyday for three weeks without a working starter motor. Was back around 1970. I was 12 years old, she was going to summer school at Slippery Rock University, finishing up on her teaching degree. The starter motor gave out on the Rambler, couldn’t afford to fix it. Where we lived, there was a big hill one street over. She’d park on top, and in the morning, the neighborhood kids would push it to get it rolling. Mom would pop the clutch in 3rd gear once it got rolling. She’d park on a hill at college, and it would drift down another hill to start.

After summer school was over, she had enough money to buy a starter, and a couple of the neighborhood kids changed it, parked out on the street.

Funny thread. Im 48 and have started lots of tractors and farm trucks this way. I was told my great grandad had a tricycle john deere he always parked on a hilly path in front of his house to pop the clutch on rolling downhill daily because he wouldnt buy a starter lol
