We have a 100w High pressure sodium dawn to dusk area light that is a rental from the power company. It was here when I bought the house nearly 25 years ago. It is really nice to have but the cost of having it is getting ridiculous. It used to be super cheap, like less than $5 a month and that included the electric that it uses as it is powered before the meter.

It has creeped up in cost over the years and 8 or 10 years ago they started charging for the power that it uses on top of the rental. Last month between the rental and the power usage it cost a little over $18 to have it for the month. I am thinking about putting up my own LED area light and getting rid of the rental. It looks like a 45w LED is about equivalent to a 100w HPS, so it should cut the power consumption in about half plus eliminate the rental fee.

Has anyone here done this and loved or hated the change? Or anyone have a LED area light from the start and were happy or unhappy with it as the case may be.

Like you I rent(ed) a HPS from the power company. Is a good deal for me as they do all maintenance and charge a set monthly fee all year around.
If it burns out or quits working, just give them a call. It's all o them.
Here a couple years ago the HPS light died and they replaced it this time with an LED fixture. A lot more light than the old HPS.
I'd do my research and get as trouble free and quality light as YOU can as YOU are going to be the one that has to change it out if it goes bad; not the power company. So many of those LED lights are made overseas, China and India. Lol, they probably all are.
You will save a lot of money going from HPS to LED. High pressure sodium is old technology.

Put your own up the Coop here charged me $350 to put a new one up. I would have done it myself if I knew they charged that much, coop my rear.

The electric company put in a new LED on my monthly rental plan to save electricity. I have no clew what watt it is but it is bright. I would guess my bill went up but I am not sure. I never look at the bill. You are going to pay what ever they say or go with out electricity. I am sure you could buy about anything and put it up and be money ahead if it lasts long enough.
