Y'all ever have a pretty good system down stuff running super smooth but then the good idea fairy comes and you hear the words " I think we can improve?"
Tell ya had this place running like a top got work done before they even thought about it constantly ahead of time , nothing but compliments , consistent 4/5's on performance reviews ,good words from the port captain all that good stuff . And for. Get me wrong there was always stuff here and there someone leaving empty water bottles in the galley , someone not taking out the trash , normal smalls stuff that's like , always gonna be a bullet point .But was told to basically take a back seat as deck lead and just listen and do what I was told and it would be even better. Asked for some examples of what wasn't being done good enough and the like. Couldn't get a straight answer.Tried to modify some stuff so it work better starting out , because a lot of times stuff just wouldn't line out right , stuff would get over lapped end up double working and yeah.. they didn't like that ... So just stopped became a good noodle and just did what I was told by the numbers they gave me and holy crap been having back to back meetings now about why stuff isn't running or look as good as it was why work isn't getting finished. Keep getting asked why is this, this way , because that's what you told me to do . Why didn't you do this? Because you told me to do this. Why are the guys doing this stuff like this , because that's exactly the way you told me to tell them to do it .
I don't know what to do at this point past just let it play out
Sorry just needed a bit of a rant

When I have had these problems, I have reverted to emails. I hate doing emails but if a boss wants to be a jerk, only converse with them on email. That way, you can have an exact record of what they said then when they say I didn't say this, then you show them, with a CC to their boss, they did say that. Got a boss right now that only wants to swing the bat with no recognition of good.

Sent four emails yesterday. One was about performance and if I was meeting or exceeding standards. Answered all my emails, except that one. So I upped the ante and sent her an email today asking the same questions and asking for guidance but I CC'd her boss and VOILA, she answered. Of course with an apology because she was SOOOOO busy but not too busy to answer the three other emails. She also had to tell me I was exceeding expectations. It was like pulling teeth.

You gotta pin them down and have a paper trail in this day and time. ESPECIALLY if you have a crappy boss. It's the game you gotta play. Sux.

…. I try not be too serious on here … but I’ve been managing stuff since I was 20 years old believe it or not lol

…. You’ll always deal with people that can talk a better game and get promoted… even though they’re not leaders and can’t get the things that matter done

… so if you know how to get the things that matter done … all you have to do is learn how to talk a good game and you’re set

…. Figure out what the brass is focused on … make those things happen.. then keep that the focus of your talking points when interacting with them

… you owe me a big red and a fried chicken wing for that advice lol

We went through a time of rotating commissioners , all of which thought their IQ's went up after their appointments, some were micro managers. I insisted on written memos when given tasks for exactly the reason you're talking about, this stopped the extra stupid, and borderline against the rules nonsense.

A paper trail is hard to argue over.....

Frankly, I think part of the problem is you make some others look bad and they get jealous or mad because they are basically lazy. They don't like being shown up. Hopefully this will pass, or someone that appreciates you will take you on, maybe a different boat...

Shoot bud one of the biggest problems I have right now is one of these guys is short fused and flys off the rails if he feels " undermined" . Like full on call eveyone up for a meeting that's 10min of him talking about how he's this rank and how when he says jump he doesn't care yadda yadda .... And 7/10 times it's something like he said do something that didn't make sense and you just asked for clarification.
Prime example, yesterday had a meeting that was basically just him with his iPad going though picture he took around the boat . Would show a picture of a ladder , " why is this here ? " Tell him that's where we've always put the tall ladders . He'd say that's not where they go. Say ok well where would you like us to put them ? He'd just get flustered and say that wasn't the point they don't go there out then where they belong.... Like .. explain to me how I'm supposed to work with that. You tell me something is wrong , I ask you how to fix it , and you just give me what.

Or we where painting two days ago, told us we had to get that portion done that day. Ok cool so we're half way though, it's like a 4hr job where 2 into it , he come out says we need to start washing the boat. Say ok but we're not done said he didn't care he wanted the boat washed . Ok so we stop put all the paint supplies up . And start washing the boat. Later that day we had a meeting , why wasn't the painting finished? Because you stopped us half way though and told us you wanted the boat washed . So we washed the boat ?

Like it used to be I got told what needed to be done and how the end product needed to look . Cool, I'd come up with a game plan , work it out with the guys and we'd just roll it out. Give updates, show pictures with my phone go from there . Or if I saw something was gonna need to be done , like of this railing is getting rusted , I'd take the 30min if I wasnt doing anything and just do it real quick. Now , everything is getting back logged and jumbled and any form of criticism or questioning to the plan is just taken as blatant whatever to authority.

Haha, my Boss got “audited” by his Boss which in my company is a Director. My boss called a started the conversation off by saying, you’re not in any trouble, but we need to talk. He proceeded to tell me they went through all his employees and he has a list of things to cover with all of them and I was the only one that stood out.

My “stand out”? Quote “too perfect”!!! My numbers are too good, my exception time was too low (yeah exception time isn’t a good thing), and my customers had nothing bad to say about me. So basically instead of focusing on everyone else improving, I need to drop to their level.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m very outspoken and don’t mind speaking my mind to anyone no matter what their title is and I screw off like a pro. I just get the work done, then play. I’m the only Tech for 14 counties so if course I know all my regular customers and have a good relationship with them. I get all my yearly training done by mid February, I hate things hanging over me. I’m definitely not the smartest tech out there, but when I come across something new I take notes for the next time.

So yeah, start screwing off more, tick off some customers, and miss my training on some months and I’ll be good to go…

I actually needed to read this this morning. Thank you. I been a factory rat for too long and never made any effort to have a golden tongue. I half need to carry around a notebook of buzz words I guess.

Bud we'd get along Amazing in a job site lol ! I never got the whole " your doing TOO GOOD " thing . Always falls back into being some back side politicn' on the manager side of things . That's and optics been in a few deals where they don't care if stuff is done or work is above level they want you to LOOK busy. Which I just don't get . It just comes off as inefficient to me ...then again I've had people I had to constantly keep doing something because other they would be asleep on watch or something

Always found these types usually hang themselves if given enough rope and their rear end gets heavy enough to do the job.

Well see here's the deal I dont get about that. Doesn't it make more sense to be able to say " my team is so good I don't have to do anything, I can sit and chill and and this sucker basically runs its self !" I mean heck I love having a hard working deckhand . Like this kid I got right now , not gonna lie , he out works the crap out of me , he's just go go go , and yeah I wanna strangle him sometimes because that gets him into some trouble at times because he goes over board and ends sup doing. Stuff like.... I don't know ..almost flooding the engines with oil .... Or he about works himself to exhaustion..like seriously had to chew him out for NOT taking breaks ..kid was pale as a sheet was barely ate that day was getting loopy, but heck he ment well ! Anyway im rambling now but what I'm getting at it just seems having guys under you that make you look lazy seems like a good thing !

And yeah I've been looking at getting a transfer more and more but I'm really loyal to my pilot, great dude , treats me with nothing but respect even when we get into it a lil , heck of a guy ! And then I'd hate to leave the guy under me out the water and possibly have some Dbag replace me .. because I'll tell you some.of these deck leads they have out here eek ....I mean they said they would transfer as soon as they saw me do it but still lol

So actually tried the paper trail thing a few times ..guy really likes AI like Chat GBT or whatever it is and he'll make up these long lists. Well I started asking for copies. Guess he didn't understand the army teaches you about documenting stuff pretty well because last year had a meeting , and I think he got confused with this own demands master of the vessel started asking questions, i pull.out my little binder had all these papers in plastic sleeves , dated with check marks showed it to him and yeah hasn't wanted to give me a copy or anything since then .
And honestly I hate even thinking about that corporate type of management stuff . Like I'm blue collar just tell em what needs to be done give me a time and cut me loose

Bowhunter and Savell hit it on the head, except be careful speaking truth to power. In some corporate cultures they don't want to hear anything but "yes." I worked in one of those cultures where telling them "yes we can do that by the date," was the only acceptable answer even when you knew otherwise. Failing was acceptable, but telling them 'No" wasn't. It is a lousy corporate culture.

That's actually my wife main response if I call her to complain a lil , " baby...just .. push him over " laugh like no honey I can't do that grin

Fun new rule we got . As soon as your done with your watch we are expected to put up everything we where individually using , even if the next guy is going to pick right back off where you where ....with the same things. So I'm stopping and extra 15 min ahead of time to put up and clean say my pain brush , roller , poles ect, clean them , put the paint up, just for the next guy to take an extra 15min to take all that back out and start back up instead of 30secs to just hand it over so they can use it . That on tope of a few extra cleaning duties though the day instead of at the beginning or end of days we are now loosing like 1.5-2hr of actual work time our the day. Tried to be in it up got (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) down so okie dokie . Rodger Rodger got two days till Cap gets back on and this place looks like an ...id don't even know what . Should be fun

Then when he asks where ya put it, say where ya told me to. Let him figure out where it is.
