That torpedo was pretty impressive....looked like it lifted the back end of the ship right out of the water. Guessing it didnt take too long to sink with the back end of the vessel missing.

i was watching a video on the mk2 torpedo which is what they probably used they are not designed to actually hit the ship and blow a hole in it but rather explode just underneath the ship which blows the ship out of the water causing more damage than a hole (a hole vs stress fractures or being ripped in half) these same principles where used in ww2 with the dam busters when blowing up the dams

That torpedo probably detonated below the keel, thus lifting the ship and breaking the keel. Our subs developed this technique near the end of WWII, following disappointing torpedo dependability and failures.

The ship was near Sri Lanka, a long way from Iran. I expect we track all submarines nowadays.

Wicked video!!!!
Must be a proud moment for the crew being on the first sub since WWII to sink a ship.

Was the ship already on fire or was it a heat signature from a stack or something? Pretty impressive though, those submariners must be pretty stoked to have made the first torpedo kill after 80 years.

Wonder if the rules of war at sea apply? If so they are only allowed to come in to a neutral port for a specified time (72hrs???) for repairs or humanitarian reasons. Past that time they face impoundment for the duration. The neutral port could face sanctions, aiding a combatant, if they don't enforce the rules.

Look up the Battle of the River Plate and the Graf Spree to see how those rules applied.

BTW, the Graf Spree was a "pocket battleship" aka battlecruiser. Battlecruisers were primarily meant to operate as cruiser killers and cruisers were fast long range warships intended for commerce raiding. In the Graf Spree's case she was operating as a commerce raider herself.

I imagine our sinking of the IRIS Dena was to preclude any chance of it becoming a commerce raider.

Didn't the British sink a ship with a submarine fired torpedo during the Falklands conflict ?

Yes, the Admiral Belgrano. She was originally the USS Phoenix light cruiser that served in the pacific during WWII, later sold to Argentina.
