While guiding in Quebec , I wasn't sure how to guide, and was afraid the hunters would make me look bad.
I was amazed at how the people from populated areas were so unknowing about things in the woods!
Had one bring me an orange tabby cat long tail and all , and ask me to skin it for him.
Remember Morses the cat commercials? The locals laughing and calling the cat that name.
While skinning a bear one night a moth flew into the light, I reached up and shooed it away, and a few looked at me and said, you're not afraid of anything. ???????????????? LOL
Got to the point I had to let two hunt together, as I couldn't be with them all.
They would be waiting for me at the road, before the best hunting time.
Even when I told them, I'll come in after you, so you don't have to leave the tree stand until I got there.
One client and his son, knew Sylvester Stallone , the father made a knife for him.
Strange just how different civilized people are.
Had one that couldn't tell a 20-30 pound cub from a grown bear.
SMH! Had to track the second one he shot , found it about 200 yards dead.
I was more concerned about the mamma than the cub.
They were following me like going on a picnic.
Have to admit, I always carried a 12 gauge with slugs just in case.

We have met the enemy and the enemy is us!

There's way more to know than any person could ever know. People who are experts on several very complicated topics, still know nothing about most things. A lot of geniuses I know are sadly lacking of what seems like very basic knowledge, that would make their lives easier. People mostly have a pretty narrow focus of knowledge and know little outside that focus. When I was a child, it used to surprise me, it doesn't anymore.

The fact there is so much to learn is one of the things that makes life worth living.

Been helping my friend since 1983 at bear camp in Ontario. The list is so long. I have told Chris he should write a book compared to my experiences. Had one family shoot a bear come back to camp, get drunk then want us to go get the bear and dress it. We said no you dress it, they wrapped the feet in toilet paper before touching it, they were doctors. Had a guy couldn't see a bear, had a hot fiance with him, found them mid hunt one day having sex in the truck outside his bait. Guy brought a prostitute with him to camp many moons ago. Guy brought his family to camp with him, wife started an affair with a really grungy guy, left her husband and kids for him. Hunter got lost, showed up on a farm took a tractor started down the road with it, thought better of it, returned to an angry farmer. I could go on and on. LOL

I used to keep a boat in Venice, LA. A couple times I took folks saltwater fishing who werent really in my circle of life - and these were people who were fairly experienced freshwater fishermen. It is like they forgot everything they ever new about fishing. I dont know how hunting and fishing guides can do it everyday

Coming out after evening bowhunts on public land most of the vehicles in the parking were always gone. Could not figure it out then I realized that they were afraid of the dark.

I was dating a girl from Chicago that when I pointed out a flock of ducks flying over she laughed and said ducks couldn't fly... then proceeded to argue with me about it. I guess she imagined ducks were all white and waddling around in the park I suppose.

LOL. You win.

When I was 16 years old I worked at the Kings Island amusement park, in food service, at a restaurant called Canyon Canteen. It was right between the entrance and exit to White Water Canyon, which had just opened and was the most popular ride in the park. We would get huge lines, of 60 or 80 people, who would buy food from us, while their families were waiting hours for the ride. Management would over schedule the number of employees, because kids don't always show up to work and because they didn't know how bust they would be. Sometimes, we would cook 64 burgers on the grill at a time, finishing and replacing them every few minutes, with two of us flipping. We had 5 fry cookers going at times.

We often had extra staff, so they would take volunteers to go work somewhere else. I usually volunteered. Once when I volunteered, I got sent to a restaurant, near the entrance, that served ice cream. A beautiful blonde girl also got sent there from another restaurant. We weren't busy and had a great time talking to each other. I was going to ask if she wanted to do something after work and for her phone number. I was sure I was going to get it, but I got what would now be called an ick. While cleaning the ice cream machine, it was steaming a lot from the cold. She saw that and warned me to be careful to not get burnt. I thought she was joking and put my hand against the metal, which was steaming from the cold. That scared her. I realized she thought it was hot. I explained it was very cold and she hesitantly touched it. She was embarrassed. I didn't ask her out her or for her number.

While we were working the song Hotel California played several times. To this day, whenever I hear that song, I usually think of her and regret not asking her out. From talking to her, she was quite intelligent, but it weirded me out that she didn't know cold could make steam. I only saw her once again, way ahead of me in a line at the employee cafeteria, by the time I got through the line, she was gone. I always watched for her and asked some other employees about her, but never saw her again.

My wife runs a nonprofit organization. One year her friends brought some other folks out of the city that were looking to donate money to nonprofits. Most never out of the city their whole life. It was an early fall storm so they backed out of beach bon fire and ocean swimming. I offered to take them up the river in my boat with a few beverages. Some looked line backers. It was a 20 minute ride from the house. It freaked them out when i asked if they've been white water rafting. I gave em some beer they felt better. They asked what kind of birds we saw along the way it blew their mind, we saw ducks and sea gulls. One asian girl started crying "you change my life".

Hunting standing milo during muzzleloader deer season, sat a client down and told him right before dark stand up slow and glass, gun was in a bogpod wrapped with milo stalks. He kept saying "well i cant see deer when im sitting down" told him a dozen times this time of year you have a short window keep sitting untill prime shooting time. The last evening he wanted to hunt elsewhere and his 180" deer would have gave him a 90 yard shot had he stayed and hunted that milo field.

I do utility pipeline for a living. One day our pipe supplier sent a delivery truck out to our shop. The driver was an older black fella that lived in the city his whole life. As soon as he got out of the truck he asked me if he and his wife were to ever buy a place out here in the sticks how would they get water and sewage for the house. I told him a well and a septic tank. I explained both to him and how they worked. He was absolutely shocked and never heard of either.

Good guides can be hard to come by. A young mid 20s fella with a fresh new guiding licence was told to load up the 6 wheeler, barrels of bait ago top up sites 25-45. He says “Uhhh, no. I’m the guide!”
Buddy says “Ok, you can go home and I’ll call when I need you”
I’m not sure who he’s working for now…….lol
Can’t blame it on TV. If he watched any of Shockeys Professionals series or Billy Molls vids, they show what’s expected from a guide.

For about five years after retirement, I ran a line of crab pots at daybreak. My buddy owned a seafood business, and we cleaned fish for a charter boat fleet. Crab bait was free, and the boss provided a boat slip and my fuel. The business had a sign-up sheet for tourists to reserve a ride on the crab boat and even to work a few pots. Not one tourist ever learned how to work a pot while the boat was turning in a tight circle, except for one man.

I was told before the morning trip that the man had mental issues that caused his mind to drift to other topics. I think he was actually extremely intelligent. Anyway, after watching and talking for a few hours, I walked him through the steps of where to stand and which hand to use for each step of the procedure, etc. To my amazement, he did it perfectly every time.

He worked in the defense industry. He was a rocket scientist.
