Guys, is it possible to overfill the rear differential?
I noticed a small puddle of fluid underneath the rear driver side.. I looked up at the axle and saw slight dripping..
Going to get some brake cleaner and wipe off the gunk until I can accurately determine where it is coming from.
I don’t know if I can keep putting oil in it until I can get a chance to fix it properly. Hopefully it is just a defective seal.
I just don’t want to burn up the gears.

Fill it up till it runs out of the fill hole and you should be good.

Did you fill it up before it started leaking? In that case you can overfill it and you would see some leaking. If you didn’t do anything and it just started leaking fill it as mentioned above. Either way, it sounds like you need a seal replaced.

Rear Diff has a plug...or it should.

Remove plug....fill with correct fluid..

It's idiot proof...if you put in too much fluid ...is simply spews out the hole.

Drip from near the axle? The brake lines are there too, make sure to check them.

Fill with the vehicle sitting level side to and front to back. Also check the breather that it's intact and working, particularly if water crossing is a thing for that vehicle.

If it’s a limited slip differential then you probably need friction modifiers in the gear oil (some come with it, some don’t).
Skipping the friction modifiers when needed can ruin the clutches in the lsd.

If it’s an open differential you don’t need friction modifiers

Only the clutch type, most common, lsd. Torsen, helical geared, lsd do not.

Could be an axle seal leaking. Bearing can go bad causing seal to leak, seal can just wear out as well.

I would jack up that side and shake the wheel and see if the bearing has play, if it does you need to fix it.
In cold weather when the gear oil is cold you can over fill it if you fill it and put the plug it before the excess has time to run out. So I always leave it sitting on a level place with the plug out and let excess run out. If its too full it will cause excess pressure and cause seals on axle or drive shaft to leak. But if its not leaking out why are you filling it?
If you don't think they build pressure just drive it and stop and take the plug out when you are in a quiet place and you can hear the air pressure come out, even hours after you drive it.

And never leave any plugs or small parts where the crawdads can steal them. But you have had that experience before, lol.
