From those who know nothing about cattle but are still curious, can you tell us what those numbers mean?

Number on the left is weight class. Numbers on the right are prices per hundred weight. 300-400 pound steers were selling for $501-$610 per hundred pounds or $5.01-$6.10 per pound.

So whats the math calculation for spending say $15,000 in fence and shelter for 2.5 acres... say a 350ft x 300ft pasture... Its currently corn stalks. Make it four paddocks and feed hay? What's the payoff for switching 2.5 acres over to cattle? I prefer Charolais. Sure seems like you just try to get as many 399 lbs calves as you can and sell them at $6.10 a pound.

I guess at $15,000 divided by $6.10 a lbs would be 2,459 lbs... divided by the 399 calve weight... is 7 399 lbs calves to pay for the costs.
So one year start this spring to plant pasture and put up fence. Get 4 bred heifers one year from now @ $3,000 each so $12,000.
So beginning of year three you'd have 3 calves that you could sell that fall for $6.10lbs x 3 calves x 399 lbs each = $7,000.

So in four years you get your first $7,000 back and you have spent $15,000 + $12,000 so $27,000...
So you are at $20,000 in four years
Make another 7 be at $13,000 in five years.
Make another 7 be at $6,000 in six years.
Make another 7 and make your first $1,000 in seven years.

That sound about right? 500 lbs calves being top rate seems like veil calves would be where it was at? Less cost?

Cattle are a long term investment..not something you jump into when prices are high

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

2.5 acres is likely never going to make sense to try and cow calf on. $15,000 for a fence and shelter, that'd be a roll Royce of shelters compared to what I'm using

Not necessarily jumping in when prices are high just of the age to buy some cows like we always had growing up and if its worth something now seems like itd be the time... not to have a bunch of costs when they aren't worth anything... right? Just thinking anyway. Fun to think about.

I've heard that actually. Only getting $500 a year farming it. They always had sheep on these old ohio farms... and a lane back to a woods... and a junk pile in the woods. There wasn't a trash man. You burned trash and big stuff went to the junk pile. Sheep would keep the weeds ate down in the barn yard, lane, and woods. There are so many farms like that here it must have been a design layed out or something. Just worked I guess.

Yes at the same time pigs weren't worth anything either we bought alot for 10.00 to 20 dollars and butchered/processed them and sold it for 1.00lb straight thru chops, bacon, ham and sausage once word got out we were getting more orders then we could handle.but we made good money doing it.

I've got nothing but respect for people that raise cattle, similar to trapping the work doesn't stop regardless of the variables. I've been trying to talk my father into cutting back some raising them but he loves to do it. Our operation started around 20-30 years ago when i made the mistake of buying two roping calves off a local rodeo for $70 a piece. They were two wild Brahman calves which over the years obviously it's gone to Angus with a few Charolais. Our little operation probably has some of the tamest cows I've seen, sometimes I feel like they're pets. I mentioned getting out of them this year and his response was why? They're the highest they've ever been, to which my reply was why not? He enjoys it I suppose but he's nearly 73 years old and has somewhere around 100 pair with a few bulls. He still raises them on his own other than a couple drives a year between feedlot/stalks and feedlot/pasture. That's a lot of work for one man and I respect that.

We were actually moving half of them off a 1/4 of stalks to the feedlot a couple weeks ago and lost one calve as he ran into the trees, one of the other guys helping piled right in behind him and said can't let that $1000 bill get away....I laughed. He wasn't kidding.

Dad did not have any steers to feed out one year. Bought two Holstein bull caves and started feeding out. Got tall but never looked like where filling out. Took to processer and was shocked to find out where 1600LB. Nice marbling and taste as good as any of are feeders. Also got free ruptured pigs to put if with feeders and cost nothing for pork.

I eat a lot of beef. Wish it was cheaper. I buy from a local processor. Cheaper than the grocery store. Still pricey.

I've kept around 75 to 100 head for about the last 20 years. The market right now is basically making up for running in the red from 2016 to 2022.

I just got a sales sheet from the place we used to buy bulls from when we had cows, the auction prices are starting at 5000 up to 6000.

As it should be. You hold a bull for 15-18 months. He's been on full feed since 7 months old. That gets expensive. Then a guy like me buys that bull and he melts like a snowball in hades running with cows and living off grass.

With the numbers I’ve been hearing I thought it’d be higher, but I know they try to keep prices low to help out the guys that buy bulls from them, that’s one reason they’re still in business.
