How would you attach the cable to the golf ball? Unfortunately, the pic doesn't show it. I thought you could drill a hole, fill with epoxy and stick the cable in. Or use a very small screw eye. If you've done it, how did you do it? ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/03/full-59687-289034-2026_03_23_10_19_40.png)

Drill through and pound a stop on the end of the cable.

Drill through and pound a stop on the end of the cable. I would do the same.
I have nothing clever to put here.

Drill through and pound a stop on the end of the cable. X3 if I was going to do it. IMO it's a waste of time to put a golf ball or anything else, besides bait, on top of your DP traps and MAY even hinder catching some raccoons, but some guys like it.

I'd be curious to see how long the golf ball/cable survives with a coon caught. As cheap as I can get golf balls, I'd just set one on top, and if I couldn't find it again, replace it.
That said, I don't use them. If I put anything on top of a DP, its a marshmallow smeared with a sweet bait.

I use Z-caps. It’s been my experience that we get bigger coon this way. They like puzzles—something that moves and they can pull it out. The Z-cap is metal, attached with heavy string. The coon pull it off and go for the bait.
Never too old to learn

I would think a coon wood chew it up but its more for checking traps and protecting bait so why secure it Seems like I've had a handful come up "missing" and I don't have cheap access to them so i thought I would try to attach it to the trap.

I like Gatorade bottles 1 liter with the bottom cut out or I have gone to 18oz clear plastic cups since I don't know anyone who drinks Gatorade any more.
keeps the rain out of my bait and lets me see I still have bait at a glance or if I caught the mouse, that has happened a few times.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Just a heads up to remember eye protection if drilling. I drilled a hole in a golf ball for a project and liquid squirted out of it at pretty good speed. I think that modern golf balls usually don't have liquid cores but, better safe than sorry. Just a heads up to remember eye protection if drilling. Great ideas! Keep them coming. Switch to bait that can handle the rain. Only push your DP stabilizer into the ground 1/3-1/2 way, don't set in tall grass, or at least mash the grass down around the trap (these make it hard for the mice to get into the trap). Move it 6 feet down the trail if you still get mice after that. It'll take them a couple days to find it again, and by then if the location was any good you'll have caught the coons. Get rid of the golf balls or anything else that in any way impedes the coons from seeing and getting to the bait. IMO, the guys that use these gimmick things on the traps are catching some coons in-spite of it and not because of it, and would catch more without them. I have tried them all. Been using DPs for near 20 years now and caught quite a few coons in them.

That was an old Titleist balata. They have not been made on a long long time. theres some balls out there that have steel cores. I believe the brand is called OnCore. I doubt youll ever find one as I have only seen them once in stores and it was an oddball golf store. cores are all solid today. the covers are pretty tough. You can tell it was a rough winter when a ball lost in the woods has more than a few teeth marks.

3/4" white pvc end cap fitted on a 1.5" piece of 3/4" pvc pipe. Cheaper than Z-caps and golf balls....about 30 cent apiece plus the short section of pipe needed. No glue needed as the pipe fits in snuggly. Cut pipe long enough so the dp can be pre-baited and spring compressed at home or on the tailgate and it'll hold the cap in place to keep from spilling bait and its easier to set at location. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/03/full-11603-289054-1000004011.jpg)
