I have a Rolex submariner. My boss bought it for me as a gift when I retired in 2013. It’s in my safety deposit box at the bank.

Yup. Bought my first Rolex Submariner Date 16613 in 1996(?) for $4800. Don't wear it much . . . but a good investment today :-)))))

Was kicking one around years ago. Never bought it dont remember the model but liked it more than more expensive options.

Then I thought about how I broke the Crystal out of a watch my grandfather had given me just doing my normal activities and figured i would never wear it and saw no point. Especially when much cheaper options worked as well. Neither been one to buy things just to show off.

Today its like beautiful guns. I appreciate them but dont want to own things I am afraid to use and scratch or tear up. So I dont buy them. I may regret that since I have a feeling I won't have the financial option to do so in any longer. But I doubt it. ( as im missing work again tonight due to health and wondering how much longer I will be able to stay employed)

Yes, a 1987 Datejust bought some 20 years ago or so.
Bought it off Ebay not running and my son serviced it for me. I wear it every day except during hunting and trapping season.
He says when he cleans it , it's gross what comes out of the band, lol.
Worth about 4x what I paid for it now.

I ended up with my fathers G/S submariner he bought in the 70's. I went to doc last week, i guess a watch collector, who went nuts over it. Told me not to wear it, never travel with it etc. Checked the interweb when i got home. Used they're asking 20k!

Rolex is a fantastic watch. And a very good investment. I found 2 Rolex’s in 2 weeks a few years back.

I received quite an education on the Rolex Line. The history. And how the company continues to keep there value with there watches.

The bad news on my Rolex’s. They were both fakes. The second one was a very good fake. So it does have value. But not what a true Rolex watch value.[Linked Image]
This is what the fake looks like

I’ve got a presidential, been in the safe forever.
I’ve got a number of decent watches, if I wear one these days it’s a Movado or my Tag Heuer Carrera.
Times get tough, good watches can be had very reasonably.

Some of the posts had me curious and i did some net surfing..never realized there was such a trade on used and collectible Rolex watches. Money to be made if you arent one of the many that get scammed by the fakes....

Its more fun going back and trying to figure out what I actually was trying to wright later. What can I say public school, dyslexic, and adhd have poor results. Should have paid attention instead of looking out the windows and day dreaming about hunting shooting and fishing all day.

Never understood the draw of a Rolex. It's watch the same as an Ironman.

Comparing a watch to an AR is not even close. A cheap AR will shoot a pie pan. A quality AR with shoot a clover leaf or smaller.

A rolex will read 6:36 AM. An Ironman watch will read 6:36 AM at the exact same time.

To each their own I guess.

Not even close.
A fine mechanical watch will appreciate in value. They are hand made, jeweled movement, gold parts and no battery.

In ten years of ownership, the watch is worth more than the truck the guy paid 70 grand for. Which is a better investment?

I was looking at it purely from a time point of view.

From an investment point of view it looks like a fantastic idea on paper. With it being such a great idea for an investment, maybe some of you should buy a Rolex every month for retirement. Again, on paper, it looks very lucrative.

Now, how big is the market of buyers that will spend $100K on a watch versus cashing in on investments on a Roth or 401K or IRA or pension of some kind. I can cash in on those anytime. With a watch I will have to find either a buyer or an auction house and hope to get full "value" of the watch.

It's great in theory, just not practical to me. If I had a watch that was worth 10, 20 100K, I would NEVER wear it anywhere. So how would I be able to tel time? LOL!!!

Depends. Did the truck sit completely undriven in the garage for those ten years? Then the watch is. But if the truck was driven to transport the owner to and from a place of employment or to conduct business in which the owner was in able increase his wealth... then the truck is.

Well sure, but that wasn't what you asked. I would never pay 70k for a truck unless I won the lottery, lol.

Bowhunter27295. You bring up a good point.

Rolex monitors there site for an entire year. Determining how many people visit there site. Continuing to determine how many are actual buyers of there watches. Continue to cut the numbers in half. Once they determine how many people would actually buy a Rolex. They cut that number in half again. Keeping the demand high. Availability low.

From raw materials, machining, jewelers, to placing the watch in the box. Is all done in house.!!!!

The watch may increase with value but how much cash will you make with the truck,
That can easily exceed the increas in value of the watch. In addition you will need transportation regardless and the truck can provide transportation and income earning potential.

Just more than one way to look at it. Nothing wrong with buying a fancy watch its just not for everyone.

This thread is pretty funny. There's nothing wrong with buying an expensive watch. It is no different than buying a piece of artwork, or a diamond necklace, or a bar of silver or gold. Are there better investments? Absolutely. But if you like it, and can afford it, then go for it.

Exactly. Myself I believe I would rather have the expensive watch over gold. Seems to increase in value over time and is also functional and can bring the owner enjoyment being used. But im rough on things having a hard time keeping nice clothing without runing it so a high end watch would likely get beat up and loose value.

It may not be for me in my current life stage but could be some day.

Ang I always thought a pocket watch with a chain would be nice to have! Be good for all those vests I used to collect in junior high..
