Got the ironwood (hop hornbeam) logs I cut a couple weeks ago all reduced to staves today. Peeled the bark, applied shellac to the outside (back, the bark side) and the ends. Then I kerf cut the logs and split the staves following the saw cuts. Kerf cutting really cuts down on waste from splitting. In all I ended up with a decent pile of staves.

Another craft...along with making fine black powder flintahs

....I wished I learned. Maybe in my next life.

Keep us posted on the Bow making process

So, do you make bows with all the staves that you have cut?

No, most of the staves I cut get sold. I have made plenty of bows for myself, and still whuittle on one every now and again.

I did years ago when I was in Scouts. I believe most primitive people worked wood while green, especially with stone tools. Then let it dry and finished it up.

That is a good pile of staves! I have a nice Hop Hornbeam self-bow I carved years ago. I never really hunted with it though. I should.
