planted 50+ heirloom vareties this year and a few F1's. my neighborhood is infested with an obscene number of coffee shops so I dumpster dive for pretty pots for transplants. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/03/full-50953-289743-1000039296.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/03/full-50953-289744-1000038872.jpg) Outstanding!!! We started 50 peppers and 50 tomatoes a month ago. Seams like we get some tomatoes in July then a dry spell them huge amounts in the early fall. We usually have a couple tables full of green ones that will get ripe until around Christmas Last year peppers did not do as well as usual for us.
Just passin through

snowy do you use grow lights? I never have and mine will come up and never get any bigger then yours no matter how long they are n the pots. I spoke to a guy that sells vegetables for a living and he said he never start squash. He said they don't really like being transplanted. I planted seeds outside last year when I moved my runt tomatoes out. They did fine. I plant winter squash.

I think this year with all the sun they got everything was up in 6 days. It was a geed germination year. I use my own seed from the best of the best tomatoes each year also. They will be 18 to 20 plus inches tall when I transplant to garden.

MJM I don't like to start squash, melon and pumpkins in house but I plant them at the ranch and it works better for me because the pheasant and turkeys find every seed to plant. So, plants have worked better but I also put a few seeds along side the transplanted produce just for insurance that I get something. Yes all those do just fine to come up for direct burial planting. I can say with plants things do set on faster then seed planting in garden. It is my experience anyway.

Mellons, squash, and cucumbers , don't trans plant every well. Those are seed planted only for me. LOL I found that volunteers that come up in the garden, ( tomatoes and peppers ) produce fruit just around 2 weeks after the transplants do. So I let them grow where they are, don't move them or transplant them. Sweet potatoes are easy to start, just put one up high, and it will sprout a bunch of slips . Potatoes that have sprouts are always planted , even those that have sprouts a foot or more long, just bury it all but the very top leaves. Same with tomatoes that get very long.

A lot of the hybridized heirloom type tomatoes cost a dollar per seed. No wonder the nurseries want so much for plants.

I just buy fresh 'maters & other seasonal produce from local growers. There are two or three hobby farmers within 5 miles of me. I can't grow it as cheap as they sell it.

No heirlooms around here unless you like spraying 2-3X/week. Fungus and disease will take out heirlooms in a heartbeat. If I want nay production, I buy hybrid and plus varieties. Spray less and get more veggies.
I try to spray natural/organic insecticides/fungicides but sometimes I have to spray synthetic. I try my best to not use any roundup. Black tarps/covers work extremely well.
Been real dry around here. I mean REALLY dry. Glad I use fertigation.
Hope everyone has a bumper crop!

I tried planting some Banana Legs tomatoes in the past two years but they germinated very poorly and were sickly. A lot of people on different websites who also tried planting this variety complain about the same thing. Only one plant survived last year. I kept the seeds to plant this year, but forgot where I put them. I still wanted to grow some so I rummaged through a big jar with dried tomatoes and found some pieces that looked like Banana Legs, but I because dried them at 75C/167F (probably a bit lower in the upper trays, but still hot) the pieces were browned, almost caramelized. I though I wouldn't lose anything if I tried, so I planted a dozen seeds hoping at least some of them weren't cooked, and not only did they ALL germinate, the sprouts were very robust, with thick stems. The same happened with my Silvery Spruce Tree heirloom tomatoes. Also from the dryer, and the young plants are unusually robust. I discussed it with some local women who happen to be molecular geneticists and they said it was very obviously the beneficial effect of heat shock. It kills pathogens in the seeds including viruses, turns on protective genes, alters accumulated epigenetic changes and triggers DNA repair mechanisms. None of them had tried it with their vegetable seeds though. Accumulated sickness with heirloom seeds seems to be a big issue especially because the tomato originates from equatorial countries and probably needs extreme heat sometimes. I thought I'd share this trick. The biggest, healthiest transplant this year however is from a seed that got stuck and dried up on the cutting board, from a cherry tomato that I bought in a local booze store this winter that also sells cheap food. It's 1.5 times taller than the rest (and I have quite a few other tall varieties this year). ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/05/full-50953-293290-1000041554.jpg)

Very interesting about the heat. Have heard about forest fire and wild fire affects but not on food crops. I will bring this up for a Penn State Guru grad friend. Thanks.
Today--- 90F degree weather not the seasonal norm

When I lived in the Amazon on occasion you could find a few wild cherry tomatoes. I picked tomatoes and walked through slash and burn clearings and dropped a tomato every stride and stomped it. Came back in a couple of months to wild tangles of cherry tomatoes everywhere. Normal hybrid tomatoes never produced a crop from all the soil diseases present. Even the fusarium-verticilium resistant strains.
