I know that they have some toxicity in their raw form, but I believe that's the first time I've heard of someone getting that sick from them. It's interesting.

Makes me wonder how critters eat them and manage not to get sick….or maybe they do?

I don't cook them overly well. Just bread and fry in butter until golden. Never got sick and we gorge on them lol. Is it possible you had false morels in your batch last year?

I had a friend that ended up in the hospital from false morels.

Personally morels are not my favorite mushroom, they are alright, but chanterelles are what I really like. They are a fall mushroom though.

Chants are a fall mushroom there?? They come out in June here. I like both, but prefer morels just a bit.

The only people I know of getting sick on morels were from eating too many or having too much butter with them. Some times people are different though as far as how things set.

I'm in the camp wondering if a few false morels were in the mix. If so that could have been really bad.

Looking at the 10 day forecast here it looks like quite a bit of rain, if we get some heat it may be a decent year for morels. Unfortunately I don't have many good trees left where I go. Most are too far dead.

Keep your eyes open for wild asparagus. its hard to find when it at picking stage but easy to see once it past it. Remake the location and check them the next year. And often you can find some still in picking stage next to the over grown stuff so worth looking.

. Morels, wild turkey or crappie, and wild asparagus used to be foraging weekend goals for spring. As nice as having everything on yout plat grown and raised off my farm. But more fun.

Yep, September usually, although I've seen them as early as late August and picked them under the first skiff of snow. Usually pop after the first good rain in the fall. I've picked thousands of pounds of them, back in high school I wouldn't take a job in the fall, I could make better money picking chantrelles after school than I could at any job. I don't know of any mushroom buyers where I live now though.

We always butterfly our cornish hens and grill them peppered with Lowrys Season Salt.

We sliced the ones we got and fried them in butter.
When you harvested them, did you pull them or cut them off at ground level?
