Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) is simply the rules athletes must abide by to keep playing the sport. It is basically that they must claim income made from companies useing their NIL (name, image or likeness) in advertising. Why does it seem so many people are against people getting paid for their work? Do you tell your kids to go to work and not accept a paycheck? NIL is NOT the athlete getting paid to play, it IS making the company that uses their status as an athlete for advertising, pay them.
I get what you are saying Trap Setter
I have a friend who plays D1 women's basketball.
she gets paid yes , not a lot , and as she put it because they are considered self employed it gets taxed at the highest level figuring she pays about 25% in taxes.
I think she needs a better accountant but another topic.
they are pushing these athletes so they could not have a job to support them through college , they are pushing them hard enough they are at a high likely hood of injury , she got injured last august and will not be able to play till this years season starts.
This is not high school basketball they are being flown to games all over the place they keep up a very tight schedule.
they may also be on a team now that is very heavy on their position or their year of college.
people see the top of the top who hop schools potentially for money.
there are a LOT more athletes who are making moves to get play time rather than spending it on the bench because of the makeup of the team they are with now.
1 move per year does seam reasonable
she is looking to move schools and has to wait for the portal to open before she can talk to anyone about moving.
my point is they are getting paid a portion of the crazy amount of money being made on them
a person shouldn't work as hard as they do to play a sport and still have to graduate with a pile of debt.
getting a portion of the money made from what you do for an organization seems fair.
yes it seems unfair that some teams seem to have significantly more money than others.
if you are going to leave college with injuries you will take with you for a lifetime , you should definitely not have to pay for it all as well. not while the organization is making money on you.
