Look up Santiam rods, they make some nice rods at a fair price. I have several, big ones for surf fishing, and some trout rods, I even bought a nice pack rod from them. Bonus they are wrapped in Oregon. Local jobs!

Barbie poles, in the river boats. They survive nearly anything.

For saltwater I have a mix of Ugly Sticks, for halibut and Lamiglass, for salmon.

My nicer freshwater trout rods are Ugly Sticks for the spinning/bait rods and St. Croix/ G Loomis for the fly rods. Yeah, nothing like being a fly fishing PreMadonna! LOL !

Fishing nice rods in a freshwater environment tend to deplete the savings account, lol! So fly rods get moved into a case to run the boat. Spinning rods get kinda, how do you say, let go.

I guess bottom line for us is buy what you won’t cry over when it gets broken, because it will.

Almost 3 pages just for fishing rods. What ever you do don't ask what size and type of line to use. LOL

I have two ultra light rods that I got from Cabelas. Enjoy fishing with them.
bought them for fishing for trout using small jigs like Trout magnets.

Ugly sticks are fine for bobber or bottom fishing. Or top water for bass. But when using a jig, almost any pole previously mentioned is going to work better than an ugly stick. Crappies bite light using a jig-youll feel far more bites with a 6-7 ft ul of any of those other brands.

I’ve been fortunate in my 50 some years of fishing people to have been carried by some good brands.
My .02 cents, apologies to the OP these may be a bit more than your after.

Fenwick is great, I only left them because they went primarily 1 piece. I don’t like that climbing in and out of planes all summer.
St. Croix are very good currently they take care of me, I’d stay Avid series or better. Just my way.
Loomis are great rods Ive tournament fished them.
Okuma is a real up and comer and good pricing. Their reels are very good bang for buck, (most)
At the northern place I have a few ugly sticks, indestructible for guests and they work fine.

Nearly all listed above have the very top end models, too rich for my blood.
A note for those who don’t know that on the rod blanks just above the handle manufacturers often have a serial number printed. If you keep that number somewhere you can use it to get a replacement or if a 2piece a new upper end if you damage yours. Contact the maker they come a lot cheaper than full replacements.

Osky
*Mentioning top ends, had a guy in a group summer before last who was very proud of his outfit, well beyond 1K all in ( he’d let you know) on its maiden voyage. Careless moment and over it went never to be seen again.
At least he caught plenty of fish after on the rod I loaned him

Yard sale-er here. Under $5 I buy it. Find the action I like in my collection, for the fishing I am going to do. To me the most important thing is the line. One half of my rods have the braided line mostly in 8 or 10 pound test. For jigging for lakers we use the white color so we can see each others line and avoid a mess when fighting two fish......jk

I like Shimano and G Loomis rods. I go cheaper on reels and a little more expensive on the rods.

I used St. Croix premiers light action / fast tip for years. Great for everything from crappie to walleye to bass.
But I have had 2 of them break in the last 3 years.
bought a Shimano sensilite for $49.95 from walmart. Same light action / fast tip. Have used it several times already and its great for all 3 species.

I've got a collection ugly stick rods with various sizes of Penn reels on them which the reels are great , then I picked up a St Croix rod and went with a pfleuger presidential reels .
While jig fishing a friend of mine loaned me one of his Fish eagle rods he bought at Cabela's and I fell in love with it as they are 7'2" and I can feel the jig when it hits the bottom , they cast as well as or close to the St Croix spinning rod I've got and handle everything well from slab crappie to small mouth bass and walleyes .

My favorite trolling rod for walleyes and northerns is also a St Croix .

You're results may vary and yes when you spend a little more for a fishing rod it returns dividends beyond belief when you graduate away from ugly stick rods .
And yes I've even caught fish after cutting a green willow off of the shore line and tied on some fishing line , sinker and a hook on a bet ha ha

You're friend along the snare line .

I am running Okuma Dead Eye classic 7 foot single peice rods I have 3 Medium fast and 1 medium light fast with Okuma Avenger ABF 3000 saltwater reels

I think they represent a very good mid priced setup

the rods are running about 70-80 dollars and the reels about 70 I caught most on sale for 50

I found the first reel in a little bait shop north side of Madison and it was the smoothest thing I had tried under 200 dollars so I bought it , I didn't find a rod that day.

the Rods I found at fleet farm , I have always gone around testing rods , with my brother , my dad , my son and my wife over the years I know what I want for feel and that is a very fast , fast = sensitive like you can feel the jig dragging over a rock on the bottom , it is feeling the difference between bottom and a fish picking up the hook.
that flexes enough but has a backbone also.

in the past I have had Fenwicks , St Croix , Diawa , Shimanno , but I am not much of a just order by description guy , I need to feel it.
need to be able to feel a very subtle bite.

fish around here seldom go over 10 pounds.

I run 15 pound Power Pro v2 braid with a mono backer under it and a 12 pound fluoro leader on my Med Fast rods and 8 pound P-line Floro-clear this is a mono core with a floro coating it is tougher and thinner than just 8 pound mono but not much more for price.

go some place with a huge selection of rods and go feel the 200 dollar rods , I like to wiggle them and see how they flex and hold them out and close my eyes and have my shopping partner tap the tip as light as possible , like not enough of a tap to depress the key on a keyboard. 2-3 light taps.
then I can go around comparing and working the more modestly priced rods to see if I can find a sleeper for performance in the less expensive rods.

for an 70 dollar rod the Okuma felt as good as many of the 150 dollar rods.

7 foot for me seems to be about right for good casting without being a storage issue

I bought 6 if these reels last year gave one to my dad , lost one with the rod it was on , that was sad and a result of trying different rod sleeves , they kept tangles down but caught the wind like a sale and the rod flew out of the boat at some point on the way to the lake. it wasn't there when we got there. that sucked , lesson learned strap rods down and use different rod sleeves.

right now I have 3 of the MEd fast and 1 Med light as my slip bobber rod , if I caught a sale on another med light I could see picking up a second and setting it up the same way.

my newest rod and reel before 2025 was 2021 so I get a few years out of them , I just got to a lot more fishing in 2025 than I had since 2021.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I have a couple Ugly Sticks that I like. But, my favorites are Fenwick rods. They really stand behind them too. I had one Fenwick that got slammed in a trunk lid. Sent it in to be fixed and got a new similar rod instead.

I like fluorocarbon line. It's not cheap, but is tough and hard to see in the water.

Okuma rods are pretty solid and the cost is very reasonable.I run them for steelhead and salmon in my hand I like them better than lamiglass.
