Always wanted to make one myself, life looks like it will slow down enough in the near future, maybe I can.

Self bow? Laminated?

I've made a couple dozen wood selfbows.

I used to make lots of self bows in my preteens and teens. I made arrows out of cattails with 16 penny nails for points. I took birds, rabbits, squirrels and chipmunks with them. I'd like to make one out of Osage orange.

I would highly recommend the Traditional Bowyer's Bible. Volume one for sure. Vol 2 is also very helpful. Volumes 3 and 4 take deep dives into rabbit holes you don't need for your first few bows.
