Huntcook, my better half as his wife, let me respond to your post last year when you inquired about a cochlear implant. We are excited to see that you have a date set up for the procedure. You are in for a truly life-changing experience that we feel you will not regret. Yes, there will be challenges to work thru, but after all, your present situation is a challenge. In your case, it appears that from what you have written, you had gradual decline in your hearing which is an advantage over my situation. After a few slow adjustments to volume control and algorithm changes, your brain will gradually learn the new sounds much easier than mine did. Because I was born with 100% deafness in one ear and have only 10% in my other ear, I lived with this deafness for 73 yrs before receiving my new implant. Therefore my brain cannot adjust to the full volume of hearing that you should be able to. It will never be the same as your former natural hearing was, but after a lot of patience and adjustments over time, it will be a much better improvement over what you are going thru now. If you have a smart phone, your audiologist should be able to connect you to difference apps to help with the learning process. and there are accessories that can be used with it such as TV streamer and especially one of my best accessory a mini-mike that i carry with me in my purse. I use it at meetings, church, etc which helps to clarify speaker's voices, etc. I am truly grateful for mine and Huntcook still chuckles when i have a puzzled look on my face and he explains to me what I am hearing - a lot of it for the first time.
Blessings for your new upcoming procedure and we would love for you to keep us updated on your progress!
