Despite some new momentum, the independence movement faces significant obstacles. Dueling petitions reflect a gap in the relative popularity of the two movements. Stay Free Alberta launched a pro-independence petition in January of 2026, requiring a minimum threshold of 177,732 signatures. The anti-independence group Forever Canada launched a petition in Autumn 2025 with a minimum threshold of 293,976 signatures.

Forever Canada is believed to have garnered some 438,568 verified signatures in the sign-up period, where Stay Free Alberta reportedly just made its threshold – though this remains unconfirmed pending legal challenges. Success isn’t assured yet though given that a significant portion of the signatures are ultimately invalidated in any petition process.

Further, on April 10, the Court of King’s Bench issued a stay after a challenge from the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation and the Blackfoot Confederacy. The legal action freezes the certification of signatures for a month on the grounds that secession without consultation of First Nations violates their treaty rights.

The CEO of Alberta Prosperity Project, Mitch Sylvestre, responded to a poll indicating 26% of Albertans supported independence by saying: “Polls are irrelevant, as far as we’re concerned here. We’re not paying attention to them”, thereby raising questions about the credibility of their organization, and how realistic they are being about their goals.

Seems like they got their hands full.

Yes they sure are. Had ome of their leaders at meeting couple weeks ago. Seems to be other religions groups getting involved and hosting meeting.

Funny how someone 2 provinces over knows so much about what's going on. Knows more then those involved. Amazing.

I know there's many on here that support independence and hopefully you can help us in Alberta achieve it. If you can buy a membership to our Alberta Prosperity it would be much appreciated if not I understand and thanks

Amazing? I may be 2 provinces away, but keep in mind that it's a pretty small world......it's only a 12hr drive. Not every rancher, trapper or hunter in Alberta is jumping onto this bandwagon that you speak of. They have a term for some of them, but I won't say it as it's not too nice.....lol. Yea, I'm 2 provinces away, but everybody's got friends & family in Alberta and are there quite often.
Cmon guys, you can't think of one possible barrier if you actually separated? What about Calgary & Edmontons populations? are they in?
This is a common pipe dream in all countries when they're not happy with government. Heck, not too many of us are happy, but to latch onto this? Sorry, but you're flogging a dead horse and I think deep down you know it.
It might be more fun joining that Alberta Militia if you're not in yet....lol

You're Land locked. There's a book of problems with this.
What $$ are you going to use?
The Natives on board?
Just a couple off the top of my head, as it's not worth doing any real research into.....lol
It's always interesting digging deep past the surface into the money trail behind these movements. Have you ever seen one that didn't have hidden motives?

I ain't against you, but there's a lot of people that aren't looking at the real big picture. I'd have relocated 15 years ago to Alberta if it wasn't for my immediate family. Saskatchewan is high on the list too.

Actually it's not bad, especially for trapping. It'd be hard to leave. There's the native issue, but Sask & Alberta are just as bad if not worse. They want everything now.
But I don't know of many flat lander that don't love Alberta. You got everything there. Mountains, prairies, lakes, sports, gun friendly places, every kind of hunting, fishing......the list goes on.

Jake a quick Google research will answer all your questions. Keith Wilson lays it all out. Jeffrey rath and Mitch Sylvester are good listening on YouTube.

Did you know the referendum results in 2021 in regards to equalization? 60% for ending it.

Done some of the homework.

By the way landlocked? We're already land locked by policy. It'll be easier under international law to get to tide water.

Nothing shows ignorance more than the ol "you don't like it leave" statement. Sure appreciate the intellectual input.

I was just thinking that. Bunch of Canadians going to war on an American sportsman forum.

We’re not fighting,,, no hard feelings,,,, nobody is going to war,,,,,,

And no, folks don’t need to move just cuz of a bunch of libtards and fake conservatives out east

The landlocked thing is not an issue,,,,, plenty of successful land locked countries,,,, no shortage of craphole countries with tidewater

And as said, an independent Alberta will have more leverage

The money definitely isn’t going to be an issue,,,, we GIVE way way way more than we receive,,,, and we are done with it,,,,

The FN’s aren’t an issue,,,,there’s a few multi millionaire chiefs that have made a fortune milking Ottawa that are scared the gravy train is ending,,,,,all the while the regular band members live in poverty

Yep I don't think the indians or those that cut off their parts to squat to pee are gonna be that happy when the mussies take over more. It'll be a eye opener for them.
