Long overdue Dave. I'm glad you're getting it done. I know a few people who have had it done and all say do your PT afterwords, no matter how bad it sucks (and it will suck) and you'll be good as new. My sister just had hers done 2 weeks ago and she's walking without assistance, but very slow and carefully. I have never had it done myself so I can't help on your questions, but I wish you the best of luck.

Had 1 knee done Feb 25. Get your quads built up as best possible BEFORE surgery. My knee strength still isn’t back to normal. Then do everything the PT put you through and more.

Had both knees replaced (at same time) 7 years ago. No problems, no more pain.
I was put out during survery ( no local anesthesia).
I walked without a cane about 3 weeks after surgery. I'm retired...As far as working a full time job after double knee replacement, maybe four weeks if your job requires sitting to do your work and NO, NO jumping, bouncing, rushing or climbing to get the job done.
Talk to your surgeon about when you can return to work.
Go to Phycial Therapy. I also did extra PT exercises at home. I wanted to recover asap.

Keep the right frame of mind before and after surgery. By that, look forward. Be ready to do this, then do the PT work. Adds up to feeling better and smooth recovery.
Keep us updated. My best to you.

Once it all over you will be happy you did it. You will need someone to stay with you for minimum two weeks after the surgery. Figuring out the meds on your own would be difficult. 2 months back to work is doable. I went back after a month for both of mine but was light duty and office work. Got a hip replaced last Friday and really hoping to get the other done in December.

30 days out from a total knee replacement, walking slow, but getting around good, Back to running the excavator and doing field work. Ice the knee everynight , take a couple Tylenol twice a day. Therapy 2 times a week, getting better everyday. They gave me a spinal block and a general anesthetic, The spinal block did not let up for 12 hrs.

Just the right amount of whelm.

Do exactly what your doctor tells you Dave, and you'll be fine.

My wife had it done a year and half ago do the pt and doing extra won't hurt anything as far as stretching the muscles .they will give you a ice machine that has a container you put water in and ice(we used old 20oz pop bottles full of water and freeze then put them in the container) the machine has a pump that circulates ice water thru tubes in elastic that wraps around your knee.everybody is different some people need pain pills and some dont my wife had hers done in plattville wisc they have a excellent surgeon he usually has a 6 month wait time once you decide to have it done.good luck.

I'm a year from my replacement. It was a piece of cake I never took any pain pills. I did my preop exercises for 2 months before my surgery. My surgeon told me that's what made it a piece of cake.
Rehab wasn't too bad. And both of my rehab techs made it easy. And both of those ladies were drop dead gorgeous. I looked forward to each appointment. LOL

Get it done

It will suck for sure right after but do your physical therapy and in short time you will be wondering why you waited so long

I don't know anyone that offers a knee replacement with a "block" (what you described as numb waist down) and they have drugs to help with the nausea afterwards, just make sure they know going in that anesthesia makes you sick.

Will be praying for you

That would explain why he had to pay in cash for each session.
