Be a couple weeks before they get here most likely. We like seeing them. We get Baltimore and Orchard Orioles

Saw the first one yesterday. Right on schedule based on past dates. Expect the hummers in about ten days.

What type of feeder y'all recommend?

Never tried feeding orioles, we don't have many here near the shore....we have catbirds that like oranges though.

Amazon has a bunch of feeders, most with some sketchy reviews....seems easy enough to make something, just basically a hanging frame to hold a cup for the jelly...

What’s this grape jelly deal?
You’re feeding it to orioles?

Finally heard and Oriole outside just before sundown. Gotta get the feeders out, buy some oranges and grape jelly. They will be all over the place pretty soon!

Our orioles showed up last week. They usually show up just before Mother's Day here. This starts a long season of loading up the grape jelly. We used to put oranges out, but they empty them clean so fast we could never keep up. They used to stay only about a month, but now it's through summer and into fall!

As the coons discover the oriole feeder, we have to go into jelly defense mode. laugh

Clay, I bought a small orange bowl and hung it in a tree , dollar general has the cheapest grape jelly and is actually made with real sugar dump it in the bowl and you can't keep the Orioles out of it, the honey bees love it as well.

I’ll be dang. Never heard of that before.
So is the color of the bowl part of the equation that brings them to the jelly?
Hang the bowl from a limb or attach it to the side of a tree?

I doubt the color is a big deal , but I think bright color attracts them.

Clay we found our bowls at a dollar tree for a buck and I drilled three holes and made a tripod holder to hang from a tree.

The color is part of the equation. Orioles are attracted to the color orange. Also, actual oranges.

Gotta find a way, a better way, I'd better wait

UPDATE!

Found 2 jars of Grape Jelly left over from last year and an orange quite shriveled up in the fridge drawer. Got my feeder out and in less than 5 minutes had Orioles. We usually have both Orchard and Baltimore.

This is the type of oriole feeder I use, cheap and easy. Stir the jelly up a little then screw jar in.

Okay, this is funny. We have that feeder, but had to do a major renovation on it. First, you're supposed to turn a little paddle to make more jelly come down from the jar into the tray, but we had to do that every 30 minutes to keep up with demand. Then we tried adding just enough water to the jelly to make it feed into the tray by itself. Finally, we found it easiest to fill by eliminating the jar and just dumping piles of grape jelly onto the tray. That was the fastest and easiest way for us to keep it full and avoid their complaints! laugh

I just use widemouth 1/2 pint and regular 1/4 pint canning jars placed on my deck rail, placed where I can see them through my window. I put 4 drywall screws around each of the jars with most of the screw sticking out, to keep the jars from falling off the wood rail. I just fill the jars as needed with grape jelly. Orioles and house finches eat the jelly. I also put out any grapes that get too old for me to eat, and the orioles and house finches like those also.

I get Baltimore, Bullock's, and Orchard Orioles here.

Update: The Orchard Orioles have arrived here. I just went out and added 16oz (half of 32oz jar) of grape jelly to the old feeder.

I walked back inside and we now have Baltimore and Orchard Orioles, living in harmony. (Sorry about the bad picture!)

I had a bird in the yard the other day. It was bright yellow with black wings, more the flight feathers then totally black, it was very close to oriole size and appearance. I haven't came up with an ID for it with some quick searching. Any Ideas?

I find if you stir up the jelly before u put the jar on I will leak out as the birds eat it.

Nice work Nate. They do love grape jelly. I got a pair working a feeder here. So colorful and quite the singers too.

Nate I just got my hummingbird feeders up too. Trying a new model this year, hope they work. Nice sturdy metal and glass combo. Got these fairly reasonably priced at home goods.

Sounds like a gold finch to me okie. They been changing color for the last couple weeks here. Orioles showed up about a week ago. Hummers are here now also.
