How much of a dip to you like before you go in? Percentage wise.

I dont bother trying to time my buys. I buy a share of VOO every other week and let it ride.

Dollar cost averaging into index funds and long trem out preforms over 80% of the advisors historically. Its not flashy or exciting but really builds wealth.

Can you really put a number on it? I think it has to be on a company by company basis. Is a tech company like SNDK that has increased 78% in the past month in the same realm as a value stock such as PG that has experienced 1.4% growth over the same time?

A 20% drop in PG would be monumental while a 20% drop in SNDK may not even come close to making it a "bargain buy"....

Gotta find a way, a better way, I'd better wait

Dollar cost averaging is always a good idea.

Another is to have some cash in wait for good buys.

The last dip in the SP is a good example.

Have not bought into a dip since 2006, when I retired the first time. We do meet twice per year with our financial planner and we move specific funds as desired or needed. Most are based on which funds are under performing and which funds we may want to use for QEOs, or if we choose to move more into fixed accounts based on our age and also the interest rates. We have some very actractive fixed rates we will be looking into shortly.

I'm 35 and ive been doing it religiously since I was 22. It hasn't always been easy to accomplish, but looking at what Ive built I dont regret a thing.

Going on pure percentage with an otherwise steady ascending trajectory 20-30% dip.

I guess I'm the oddball here. I hold on to cash and watch a small number of stocks whose fundamentals I like. When there is blood in the streets I buy those stocks. When there is a recovery I sell part of the holdings and maintain cash with the proceeds until the next bloodbath. This approach requires a lot of patience as it can take months or years for the right circumstances to appear but it works for me.

Just doing what I want now.

Nothing wrong with that approach, but im genuinely curious if you've been able to keep up with the market averages over the last 30 years....with that type of patience, seems like itd be hard to beat dollar cost averaging over the long haul.

I'm inclined to use a set of modified bolinger bands and a few other technical indicators to make my market decisions.

If looking solely at percentage numbers, follow the Fibonacci prime numbers, resistance levels and income averaging.
