We were looking through old pics. This was from 2019. We were trout fishing, floating worms off the bottom. Something smacked and went nuts. Fought for a good while and when it came to the surface it looked weird, whitish. Here it was on its side. When landing, we noticed that this big ol bass had hooked itself on the gill plate.
Sent him on his way. A happy accident as Bob Ross would say!

Looks like a nice fish.

Catch and release confuses me.

Maybe it identified as a trout?

C&R is for those who cannot filet.
That's a nice one.

Season dates are weird for those over here.
River, stream, lake, pond, trophy, extended, blah.

Even if it was in season, I would let it go. Not a good eating fish, IMO.
That one must have given you quite a tussle.

Except musky it seems. Thought I was gonna get lynched one time by a group of guys at work that were talking musky fishing. I asked them if they had any good recipes I could use if I ever caught one.

Great photos and nice fish.

Many years ago I knew of a tributary creek to a reservoir in CA that was closed for trout until April 15, but was open for smallmouth and catfish all year.

I told a game warden one time, "... ya, I'm fishing for smallies but I can't keep these 20" rainbows off my flies,,,".

Good luck,

Pete

Really? LOL

I probably release 90% of the fish I catch. I just enjoy catching them. I’ll keep the better eating fish, crappie bass, perch, walleye. But anything out of season or anything that doesn’t make good table fare gets thrown back. Warm water bass is not a good eating fish.

My granddaughter and I catch a lot of fall fish in one of the rivers we frequent. We have a blast doing it and they run large in that river averaging about 12 inches. But they are not good eating. Why would we keep them?

Eh...wot?

Nice fish.
Those little rainbow trout in that lake make excellent Big Bass bait
A 10" trout isn't too large for a bass that size

Sure. Missouri Ozark streams are closed from late February till Memorial Day for black bass. Gives the fish time to breed and get off the nest. Ozark lakes are open all year around though. Always been that way.

Don't listen to the snobs JP, large mouth out of clean water eat just fine. I fish small pasture ponds so I tend to release anything over about 2.5 pounds and eat the smaller ones who probably aren't even producing yet.

Fry them in a good batter and make up some tarter sauce- they are better than any kind of catfish in my mind.

The largemouth that are about a pound or a pound and a half are the best eating.

Catherine could be set up road side selling produce with a big sign says tarrif free! grin

no, I ran because I only wanted to show the fish and a way to hold it.

You have a ton of conventionally pretty women over there (the list above, and you forgot Kayleigh.... and Mrs Langley)))), you don't need any hideous feral slav ogres such as myself in the mix smile

Well, you live in the frozen north and I think most fish are better out of cold water. How would you say smallmouth bass rate against perch, walleye, pan fish, you know, the good eating fish? LOL
