Looking at the right place at the right time kind of photo.

Something caught my eye by our wood stove ash dump pile yesterday. It is some distance from our home to the dump area and something looked different to me.

So I went and got my binos to look better.. I can't see as good as I used too at a distance so I have to cheat at times to see good detail. Well it turned out this old girl was enjoying the warmth of the ash pile in the afternoon sun.

She had wallowed out a bowl and was dusting herself in what appeared to be a moment of relaxation and contentment..

I've done the same with like results. Always feel good to do something for wildlife. also mix in some Seven dust and put it in a small covered box for the rabbits to clean up fleas.

I have a larger more established dust bath area under a big old cedar tree ( it was a sapling ) I brought home from Arkansas back in the early 90's. I put some Diatamaceus Earth in that one for the Spring and Summer to help them with parasites.

Potash is a great fertilizer, but I have found that excessive amounts of ash will kill small trees near it.

If you had any kind of lice or flea I would think wood ash would be some serious relief!

Same thing only different. Our home is wrapped around with 100 plus tall red oak trees. I have one of those leaf sucker uper's to pick all the leaf's up with. I take them in the woods and dump them in a big pile. The deer pick through it looking for acorns plus there always laying right in that pile. My wife calls it the deer mattress. We see turkeys once in awhile picking through it also.

I burned wood in an outside wood stove for at least 30 years. So, I have a very large ash pile which has made for a good firearm backstop.

Wife told me to put on clean socks every day. I tried, but after 7 days, I could hardly get my shoes on.

The neighbor plants a couple gardens every year. He will come and clear all of the wood ash out for his garden soon. It doesnt get a chance to get too big. It took a bunch of burning wood all winter to make that little bit of ash.

Got a long distance photo of another hen at our primary dusting spot under our cedar tree from Arkansas. About 100 yards below our home along our drive.

During all the dust in the air and noise in the dusting process a doe had to come over to see what all the fuss was about. smile

Wildlife is very entertaining and interesting at the same time.

No Doug that is a hen turkey on its side and that is part of the out stretched wing that has light colored feathers. They dust that way I assume to get the dust under their wings and close to their skin. The feathers are not as prominent under the wings.
