So told someone last month I'd post slem pictures on how I mod my rifle stocks to be a lil handier and sleek next time I did one and just so happens all the stuff for my wife's .270 came in so figured why not.
Disclaimer off the bat , I'm not a gun smith , I'm not a really good woodworker all things considered and I don't shoot big magnums with heavy recoil so don't know if these mods would be safe for that . Also if you like plain jane stock and they work for you , cool awesome not saying you need to do this .

Ok so the base stock is gonna be a boyds pro varmint. I LOVE. These stocks , there pretty economical coming in right at $180 new , the varmits profile is just one I really like and I feel makes them way more enjoyable to shoot with the grip angle , and hont just the way they kinda cage the recoils impulse. The issue is our the box there a lil ...big and blocky. Which is fine as a bench gun or if you have big ole hands but I'm wear a women's small in gloves so there a bit on the bigger side and in the woods I found them not as handy as a thinner profile when it comes to take off hand shots and just general carrying and then one day I was able to shoot a guys coyote rig that wore what I think was one of the manners stocks that hand more of a detailed kinda grip and I as just in love
[Linked Image]

But manners and all those super nice stocks are way outta my price range so stated modding my pro varmints lol and as you see I've had a lil practice. And after my wife shot my .243 with my the modded pro varmint she said she wanted the same deal for her .270
[Linked Image]

So here we go . It's honestly not super hard to do this . First thing is where gonna do is all the big stuff real quick, which in this case is thinning the for end down
And I like using one of the portable belt sanders with some 60gr to do that rela quick

Before

And after

Then I go back and slicken up the front end to a more traditional profile not perfect but it's just the rough idea right now
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]

Now the meat and potatoes of this. The grip. Wife said she likes the way mine are and since this is a lil bit of a surprise I'm just gonna do it like I would for me just a tad bit smaller. I just grip it like I would while I'm shooting and tractor our with a marker

Just gives me ones to color in person say , I also go back and trsc our the pistol grip a little bit
[Linked Image]

And again rough work so using a power tool and I love this lil 1/2" belt sander for that...also works great for trap mods lol
[Linked Image]

Basically I taking. Our material so this confirms to my hand better . You want it like a good glove , you grip it and your hand just fits perfectly , no trying. To adjust your grip to get comfortable or anything just there and perfect .

So once I get it where if feel pretty good I'll put the bigger stuff up and break out the Dremel for the more detailed stuff. Finger groves , corners ect
[Linked Image]
Another 30min of smoothing stuff out , adjusting this and that till it just fits like better and where here
[Linked Image]

Now to strip it all down and smooth it out with some 100grit then 120 then 220 with the plan sander
[Linked Image]

Then I toss the action back to be sure . First two id don't I ended up going back because things kinda changed when you have the action in and where throwing it up working the bolt or trigger
[Linked Image]

Felt like everything was about perfect so went back and hand sanded everything real nice with some 220 today

[Linked Image]

And instead of painting this one I wanted to show off the woods grain but also have some color so big thanks to the person who told me about this colorful wood stain . Had the wife pick out which she like the best saying. It was for a bookshelf lol
[Linked Image]

Aannnd our first application . Might do one or two more since it's supposed to dry fast thing I gotta figure out a clear coat to throw on it and then just give. It a lil JB weld bedding job

Looks like a pretty slick custom job. Nice work. Looking forward to seeing it clearcoated.

Thanks ! Means a lot coming from a craftsman like you grin it's gonna be a few days ..or weeks though till it gets a coat , just got off the phone with a guy from accurate shooter whos a dang artist when it comes to stock painting and he put me on what I needed so got war for a $30 can of this special clear coat to come in lol
But put another coat of the stain on and man I'm liking it dang camera makes it look more blue then the actual color though smirk

I was gonna suggest spray clear coat for automotive wheels. Really tough and high gloss. Would look good on that blue.

Also just a lil something, was able to find a scope with almost the exact same reticle as the one her dad had in the old one , just now she can actually adjust the scope better

And she ended up seeing it and is over the friggen moon lol, just spend 10min explaining to me which of her dresses she thinks will go with it
crazy laugh
