Not necessarily. Lots of people can afford new vehicles, and buy them without much discomfort or going broke.

I have two Toyota 4x4's each with over 400k miles. My newest one a '99 I bought for $10,000, it had 65k when I bought it, it's still worth $5000. That truck has cost me 1.49 cents per mile to drive, I'll stick with older trucks for reliability and actual cost to drive

Let alone the prices.
Newest vehicle we have is a 2018.

I at least need "four wheels and a seat", where's the seat?

I've drove old crappers my entire life. I bought a new one a few years ago and I'll probably do it till I die.

I am old enough to have owned lots of old and new vehicles both old and used over the years.
I can tell you unequivocally that newer vehicles are way more reliable than the older ones whether they were new at the time or not.
My first vehicle when I was 12 was a 1961 corvair station wagon,I drove around the local sand pit whenever I had money for gas.

Have several high mileage vehicles and always something needing fixed. Not sure how its considered saving money to always be fixing something and/or broke down waiting. I don’t view a high mileage vehicle as reliable. Might work most of the time but you know the next hang up coming soon. Not if but when.

I like to buy new and keep them until they are reaching this point, then dump it and buy new again.

I’m considering that approach for the next car but not truck. I use and abuse a truck so the depreciation would be astronomical. What is your break point on mileage.

Depends entirely if you’re mechanically inclined and have an indoor space to do the work yourself,,

If not,,,, you’ll be nickeled and dimed paying someone else to preform the upkeep on an older vehicle

Don’t think there’s a specific age

Some are better than others,,,, some are better backyard mechanics than others

My trapping truck is an 03 gmc/2500

It’s near the end of it’s life,,,, I’m a decent mechanic and have kept it going with minimal expense

My everyday driver is a 18 dodge 1500

Likely buy a new truck next year and use the dodge for trapping

From what I’ve experienced generally anything over 100k miles is an ongoing problem. Some problems bigger than others. I’m trying to figure out what those are doing to get 100-500k miles without putting a penny into the vehicle. Heard that a few times but not buying it.

It depends on the individual vehicle. My last truck was getting to be a p.o.s at about 130,000, so traded it for a new one.

I put some money into my older vehicles. It comes with the territory, but nothing terribly expensive. So far I've come out money ahead buying used. All between 33,000 and 80,000 miles when purchased. I don't care how anyone spends their money and not trying to change anyone's mind. Just sharing my experience. I've run all these cars to 180,000 to 208,000 miles.

I’m over top that mileage on more than one current vehicle however I’ve paid for the high mileage many times over.

I ordered a new one a week ago. I ordered it the way I want it, and I’ll still always have other older trucks around too!

100k is not high mileage in my book. Maintain em and they will go along way. Do research, avoid vehicles that have known issues. No reason a guy shouldnt beable to get 250k easy out of a rig unkess you are beating the snot outa it.
