It’s a legume similar to alfalfa. Deer elk and antelope won’t leave it alone.

I had thought about planting some in years past but wasn't sure how it would do down here.

Sanfoin definitely smells good enough to eat. Some people in Ohio use it for erosion control on steep hill sides, they don't want to mow. In bloom, you can smell it from hundreds of yards away. I imagine it makes really good honey.
