Have you guys been noticing more grackles than usual lately??
They have seriously swarmed our feeders this year.

I'd never seen them in Utah until the last few years. Must have seen 20 of them on the golf course this morning. They Just look like long tailed blackbirds to me.

Pour a little feed on the ground and let them get used to eating there. Set yourself up with a shotgun and a cool beverage at a distance of about 30 yards. When you figure that there's enough grackles on the bait pile, send them a load of #8 lead.

We've got plenty of them around here. I'm not even sure if they're legal to shoot.

Grackles are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty. You can pretty easily get a depradation permit for them if you have fruit or other crops. My maternal grandfather used to hunt and eat grackles and robins, back after the Depression. One of my maternal great uncles was known for shooting them out of the air with a .22.

Haven't seen many yet. Starlings are giving me a itchy trigger finger though.
