I would recommend that you take that setup and go out in the yard and bed the setup and cover it .Poke around the screen area and see if there is any give or sliding of the screen . Better to find out in the yard than on the line if you need to make changes. What area of Louisiana are you from. Lafourche Parish, You? I was planning on doing a bit of testing, that was the first one and i dug through the screen with the snips to start the cut I cut another half dozen with a dremel cutter that fit snug, i snapped a couple of them with an axe handle and they seem pretty solid but i will bed some and test them out, You use wire screens?

The stiff wire works fine,I use them and under all as well, with the under all's you'll have a few more misses than with the stiff screens. With the screen the whole inside of the jaws is the kill area, however when the foot placement isn't perfect you might get a few more poorer catches Do you slit the screens or just slide them over the pan and under the jaws?

When Rick speaks, it’s wise to pay attention……and he doesn’t speak often. He’s either sleeping or working…..or catching a quick nap on the way home from work …..lol.
That was my one thought when using stiff wire screens, you might be increasing your pan size. I’m a small pan guy but don’t lay much steel in the dirt, mostly snow. Good topic K.Adams!

How did you cut the slits? I have made a mess of the screen when I tried.
I sandwiched two screens together and stapled them. I left one side open and slipped it over the pan. It worked, but made the operation expensive. Double the amount of screen per set.

Here are a few things you might consider K. Adams. Pan screens, hole sets, and high density coon populations usually don't mix too well. Nine times of ten Rocky will pull up any type of pan cover he comes across. Your best bet is to present sets and attractants the coon is most likely to pass by. In your case an under the pan -type system might be a better option if you run into trouble. You might find these handy on down the line. Just cut them to your size pan. DIY PAN PADS

On the first try, I snipped a few wires with a set of dikes to get game shears through and make the cut, The much better result (not pictured) was done my marking the line for the slit with freezer tape laying the screen on a board and using a Dremel with a cutting wheel.

DIY PAN PADSThe masked bandits are definately on my radar and a concern, I have been thinking about how to avoid them as much as possible. I appreciate the tip and will make some of those, I'm going to be targeting bobcats and also trying to avoid coyotes on a trip I'm planning on public ground. I'm looking into scents and baits for cats that will be less appealing to coons and grinners if you have any suggestions on that Im all ears.

I am surely paying attention, just wondering if he used a screen that didn't cause a bump on the pan, Or if he was unconcerned with the bump that the screen produced?

I have never seen where screen is necessary…. Just want to keep dirt from obstructing the underside of the pan, not increase the effective pan size. As a matter of fact, I would like the target animal to step right on the pan. What ever it takes to achieve this is what I do…wax paper can work and almost disappear over time, baggies and denim ( or similar) will work and not make my pan area too much bigger.

I attach heavy screen this way, it can't move much after the trap is set ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/05/full-50687-293978-full_50687_61774_0913201730h3_1.jpg) I mentioned on another thread that there's a thread on here by rp Martin that I believe you would benefit from It might already be in the archives

I'm using a paper cutter to cut them. I will look at that post,

I use quilt batting. It's poly fill in sheets that's about 1/2" thick, just cut a yard into several hundred squares. Throw one under the pan and your set. cut 2-1/2x 2-1/2 fits pretty much all my traps. KAdams that is a fine looking trap.
