I was prepping today for a skunk trapping demo next week at the Idaho convention and thought I needed to make sure of the availability of some traps I might recommend.

I was planning to briefly cover trapping with foot traps for skunks. I was going to suggest some double jaw traps and was surprised to find no one was offering any 1 1/2 long springs nor did I see any 1 1/2 stop loss. My hiatus in Alaska I guess made me fall behind in knowing what was available.

When did the trap makers discontinue the 1 1/2 long springs and 1 1/2 stop losses. I looked at several dealers and didn’t find any.

Trail cameras and fresh snow have broke a lot of trapper’s hearts.

That was always my main nutria trap back in the day. Sad.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

My old victor and Blake& lamb 1 1/2 stoploss are the first traps I reach for when marsh trapping rats. I bought some new Sleepy Cr.1 1/2
longsprings several years ago but like the old makes better. As long as I can continue trapping i will use the older traps first.

One of the best weasel kill taps ever made and could be used in the water for muskrats, mink and racoons. To answer Marty, - Weasels are less plentiful as wetlands disappear and the 110, 160 and 220 size BG's have become the versatile trap of the U.S. The 1.5 LS out lasted the common V rat trap in its durability (steel vs. wood) and I have a pile of cast jaw 1.5's I use in the water when I'm trapping from the boat. ..................... the (old fashioned) mike

The 1 1/2 LS went the way of the dinosaur. I miss that trap as it was a workhorse. Growing up everyone had 1 1/2s down here, I mean they were everywhere. They were in the top three, probably in the number 1 spot, of the most popular trap down here. #11s were a close second and #2's where third. It was the best nutria trap you could ask for as it had enough jaw space to get a good catch. I wish NO BS would start making long springs, especially the 1 1/2s and 11's.

I bought a lot as a kid. Every batch of fur I sold saw me picking up more traps. Often it was 1 1/2 long springs. I loved them for muskrats and raccoon. I sold a lot of them when I moved to Alaska. I kept about 3 dozen. I didn't see much open water rat trapping and there's no coon in Alaska. I know they make a good foot trap for marten but if I was going after marten I had planned to use my 120s. As it is I didn't get to do any marten trapping for myself. Helped a friend set up his line a couple times but my work schedule was such I didn't get to trap.

I also sold my 1 1/2 stop loss traps. I didn't have a lot, maybe a couple dozen, but I liked them for skunks when I had to use a foot trap. Sometimes I'd run into one that just wouldn't go near a box trap or body grip box. And they made a great rat trap for shallow water. Enough heavier to keep the rat from balling up a big wad of reeds.

Like I said earlier while I was in Alaska, I kind of quit keeping up on the traps and what was available and what was discontinued. I was sure surprised yesterday when I started looking and found no one offering a 1 1/2 long spring, standard or stop loss. Looks like I need to pick them up when I see them for sale.

As you all know they got too expensive to make....the long spring manufacturing is the costly part. With the low fur market the new trap market is tough.
With all that said...I agree I still like my long spring traps.
