My daughter is currently stationed there. She was in a friend’s apartment building on the fifth floor in Santiago, Chile when the earthquake hit. She said the building was swaying pretty good. She said there was a pretty heavy aftershock a few minutes later.

I've always wanted to experience an earthquake, but I'm guessing I might change my mind if I experienced a bad one.

I'm glad your daughter is ok.

I've never felt one in Oregon but a couple in Ecuador. The last one was 6.2 near Quito and I was sitting on a commode on the 4th floor of our Hotel. Very weird feel.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

I've only experienced one that I recall. I was in Salt Lake City in a hotel several floors up. Shortly after I got out of the bed a 2 + hit. I saw white caps in the commode bole!

Be scary in a high rise apartment allright.

6.0? that's hardly enough to even be fun.
July 2020 7.8 Chignik earthquake, now that was a fun one. A 7.8 is about 30X more powerful than a 6.0

We were in LA when the largest earthquake on record which was a 6.7 hit and we were on 6 th floor of the Howard Johnson Hotel and like others said here that the toilet water was all over the floor. Transformers popping off on power poles and car alarms going off! The hotel was condemned after that shaker. Buildings in Santa Monica that had been there since early 1900 were damaged. We couldn’t leave fast enough and felt after shocks all the way into Oregon.
Just remembered when going through the Sanfernando Valley on the freeway we saw huge apartment complexes leveled lots of damage but that freeway was open but suffered some damage.

Sure am glad your daughter is ok. What happens now? I felt a tiny one once. That's good enough for me.

Nothing happens, earthquakes are common in Chile. Chile might have more earthquakes than any other country because it is located on the Pacific Rim of fire and sits over where two tectonic plates come together.

As waggler noted, this was a relatively small one, they didn't even issue a tsunami warning.

The most powerful earthquake ever recorded happen just off the coast of Chile in 1960. it was a 9.5 and caused an 82' high tsunami. killed more than 1,600 people and caused $400,000,000 to $600,000,000 in property damage.

I've felt two in all the many years I've lived in southeast PA. The first one was about three decades ago. I was at home and heard the jars in the spice rack start clinking and rattling off each other and felt the vibration shortly after. That one shook the side off an apartment building near the epicenter in Wyomissing PA.

The second was a few years ago and my wife and I were in a veterinary exam room with a new pup. That one was a bit stronger, it felt and sounded like there was an unbalanced washing machine on spin cycle in the next room. No reported damage from that one.

You were there for the big one? Wow. I’ve felt a lot of earthquakes a couple over 7. Scariest thing is being on a remote coast on the boat many hours from town and a tsunami warning comes over the radio

I have read about all I can find about that 64 quake. One report stated they saw some mountain peaks move when that happened. Imagine the sound.

I have been through several on the big island of Hawaii when I lived there. One was in a backpacking tent in Volcanoes Natl. Park. I was doing a study on the birds and Koa forests for my art. The experience was neat then, there was nothing above my head to worry about so I enjoyed nature observing the ground and sounds .

I have thought it fun to name a pub in AK the " 9,5 Honky Tonk "...locals would call it simply the 9 .

The 1964 quake in Alaska is considered the second strongest ever recorded.
