This grove of Sierra redwoods (Sequoiadendron giganteum)was planted by me and my dad in winter of 1971. An impressive stand now. Always 10-15 degrees cooler in there compared to other farm temperatures in the heat of summer.

I took forestry as a project in 4-H and planted 600 norway pines and spruce each year for 2 years on a side hill on our farm when I was 12 and 13. The farm was sold when I was 15. The new owners clear cut the pines in the early 200s when the plantings were about 40 years old. Have not planted many since.

Recently planted a few sawtooth oaks and trophy pears at my hunting club. They are about 10-12 feet tall now. Hope I live to see them produce acorns and fruit. One of the pear trees bloomed this spring.

I have seen several stands of loblolly pine that I planted early in my career clearcut. One stand that is special to me, I planted the year my wife and I got married 31 years ago. The driveway to our home runs through the 40 acre stand. It is mature now and ready to clearcut but with prices the way they are right now I think I will hold on to it a little longer.

I planted thousands of trees back in 73/74.Used to plant 800-1000 a day depending on terrain and how well they scarified the ground.Did it as a summer job in high school for a few weeks each year before my timber cruising summer job started up.
Never went back to see how big they are now.For sure not cut yet-they only cut 80-100 year old spruce here.
That bush I planted is no doubt some good lynx habitat now.
The early 70s was a great time to be a young buck with a pocket full of spending money.

That's about how I did as a tree planter on good level ground. The of the up and down mountain terrain with brush and downed limbs we were lucky to plant 400 in a day.

1,000 a day is pretty good production with a dibble or hodag from my experience in the southeast.

When I was a teen, I planted acorns every year. Hundreds a year all about the woods. Picked up the tradition from an old grape farmer I knew. He let me hunt and trap his land. I also worked on his farm and later ran it for him in my twenties. RIP Mr Restivo

Ive also planted apple, pear and peach all over my land now.

Use to plant pine whips as a teen also. Advertised at a local hardware store. Planted about six small 100 plant groves that summer vacation. Didn't make much money but still drive by two of those pieces of land that still have pine on them. Payment enough

I drove by a place awhile back where I planted trees when I was a kid.
Holy crap those trees got huge after all these years.
Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I didn't plant it but the creek I played in as a kid was just grass on both sides. Now its trees and hasn't been touched in years. Neat to know what happens to a place after leaving it alone for about 35 years to able to judge what 20-30 years growth means.

Nothing I've planted has really taken off. I planted 14 trees at my first house in 2002. Got a heck of a deal on ash trees at the nursery auction... by the time I moved away 20 years later they were about all dead from emerald ash b.

Mom and dad always talked about planting small sapling pines for a wind break when they were kids and how neat it was to go by and see how big they were now. I think that was more common in Nebraska.

Planted red and scotch pine on my grandfathers place, top of the mountain was bald so figured it was a good enough place, lol
Last time I walked it they were about 50 years old, the scotch pines were starting to die, the reds still going strong...These trees were little "sticks", free from the state..never tended to or watered after the initial planting, survival of the fittest!, lol

My brothers and I planted 1000s for boy scouts and 4H during the 70's. Mostly Norway spruce, red pine and larch. With four people, you can plant a bunch of trees in a day.

The kids and I planted 1000s of oaks and SPFs 35 years back. Quite a few remain and are getting big.

Alot of people in our small town planted trees for USFS in the 70's. I agree 1000 trees was a good days work. I made pretty good money for a 15 year old, 38 dollars per 1000 trees. I made enough to buy a Remmington 870 Wingmaster. I still have that gun. Took Mary to an area we planted in 72 or 73, crazy how big the trees are now nice looking Red Pine.

Built my first house in 1977. Transplanter some loblolly pines. They came off a railroad track. Wow, can’t reach around them now.

When I was a teenager in 4-H I took on a project. I grew fir trees from seed and eventually planted them partly on my Dads place and partly on a neighbor's property. In I think 2007 I helped log my Dads place and a couple years later I took the job of falling the adjoining property that I had planted. I replanted my dad's place again and the trees are about 6" to 8" through and probably 30 ' tall. The adjoining property was never replanted but it has naturally reforested, way behind though.

Blue Spruce, white Spruce, White Pine, Tamarack, Balsam. Had some high spots in my meadow that are not wet. Good places to plant these. Makes more cover for the critters. Wasn't many coniferous trees on my property now some good stands started.
