When I was in grade school, in seventh and eighth grade, we did two canoe trips where we were basically on our own. In high school we had an annual long walk, where we were basically on our own too.

I think it's good for kids to do something like this.

There is a great book about an annual high school canoe trip. I think it was in Canada. A student gets mauled by a grizzly. I think he dies of an infection. Read it about four years ago but can't recall the title of the book.

Just found it. The Twenty-Ninth Day: A Grizzly Attack in the Canadian Tundra

When I was a kid boy scouts provided adventure. Its a real shame that fine organization fell apart. I doubt seriously that any of the schools my grandkids attend/attended have anyone on faculty capable of teaching woodsmanship and first aid/survival.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

How'd I know it'd be a private school?

Our boy scout troop was luck in that we had great scout masters. Lots of hikes and camping in all kinds of weather. I do think any military service would be the biggest help for anyone. It would teach respect if nothing else.
