waggler, I lived in Southeast Asia for 12 years, a civilian and made many friends there and some of them have been here to visit. I am over 80 and no desire for a long airplane ride any more. Fishing trips to Canada are long enough. I enjoyed it over there and had several serious female friends but could not see them living here in the US. All is well.......jk

you won't have near the freedoms you do here...if that's important to you. Or the hunting, fishing, trapping…….but I guess it’s cheap & warm if that’s all a guy needs in life…..lol. Not for me.

To warm there. I like cool to cold. If I could I would go north somewhere. And this for me too

Someone mentioned Costa Rica....My wife knew a salesman that married a woman there, he ended up married to, and supporting her entire extended family... Houses have no AC, or window screens, everything constantly damp, and hot, whatever bugs, reptiles, etc., that lived outside was also inside....said you needed an armed guard if you went anywhere or your car would be stolen. He hated it there....now this was about 20 years ago, maybe it's changed, but this was a first hand account.

I could never feel at home moving to a different country. Maybe a lot of positives but I love my season and outdoor activities and freedom way more. I could not stand living in southern US either for many reason also.

Doesn’t matter were your from
Once you become an expat
You lose the tourist shield
It may,,, or may not be a problem,,,,
But it’s certainly something that needs to be kept in mind
My current favorite spot is Belize
Spending more and more time there each year,,,,
Wouldn’t relocate there permanently tho

When you are lying face down in the dirt, blood trickling out of your nose and mouth. Looking up towards the sky, and seeing a short man holding a machete in his hand while smiling over you... Remember, you were warned. This is a third world country. People are killed just for the fillings in their teeth.
The exchange rate is 50:1, 50 Bot for every American dollar. You will be watched everywhere you go. Thieves and those wishing to do you harm are watching also. You are also not allowed to carry a firearm for protection. Visit for a week or so, but to permanently live there, no thanks.
There is no place like home, the good ol' US of A. Sounds like Chicago or Minneapolis.

I have driven all over central and Pacific Costa Rica, and never experienced what you describe. I have heard that the low elevation, Carribean side has a differnt sort of people and a hot, humid climate. I had no desire to go there.

you won't have near the freedoms you do here...if that's important to you. I have a good friend (an Okey) who moved down to Baja California about 26 years ago. He says he could never live up here again because he has so much more freedom down there. Example: Built a house with no permits, drinks a beer while driving around town and no problem since he's friends with all the cops...etc.

I have driven all over central and Pacific Costa Rica, and never experienced what you describe. I have heard that the low elevation, Carribean side has a differnt sort of people and a hot, humid climate. I had no desire to go there. I lived a year in Costa Rica as a child. (We drove down there from Oregon). Nicest people ever. If you would ask where the post office was they wouldn't just tell you; but would personally escort you to make sure you didn't get lost. Down in Puerto Limon (Caribbean) the people are mainly of Jamaican descent and most speak quite a bit of english. "Good morning love, how're you today?" Typical exchange on the streets of Limon. Up around San Jose it is year round spring-like weather. Not too hot, not muggy...just about perfect. Except for the rainy season where the day starts out sunny then it clouds up around 11:00 am and you get torrential rain for an hour or two and then the sun comes back out. Only problem with C.R. anymore is it no longer is a lot cheaper than the USA. Did I mention that if you order a beer they automatically bring you something to nibble on with it? Chuck (Newhouse 114), fell in love with the place when at a small out of the way pub they brought a plate piled high with Brahma skirt steaks as the free accompaniment to the beers we were drinking. A group of about eight of us. All childhood friends of mine from 1968. (They did not allow either Chuck or me to pay for the beers either). Costa Rica has much to recommend it. That said, I've not been there for 25 years so of course, change is inevitable.

I'd rot and die in tropical climate. All those constantly growing plants, sweaty noisy people and crawling bugs 12 months a year is personalized nightmare. It's okay for a change, but snow is bliss. The niceness of people would be irrelevant as long as they were few and stayed away from me with their small talk As for healthcare, I've decided to let nature take its course whenever possible. Doctors already saved me a couple of times and they shouldn't have, I would have been better off dead. If I were pretty, I'd probably sell myself as a mail order bride to a grumpy sociophobe somewhere close to the polar circle and never go south of my current 54°N ever again.

Agree Tatiana, southern places suck-full of peope, diseases and poisinous critters of all sorts, and smelly and dirty with a lot of places outside of the resorts covered in trash.Water is dirty and full of parasites and drinking it will clean out the bowels.
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.
