I have a good friend (an Okey) who moved down to Baja California about 26 years ago. He says he could never live up here again because he has so much more freedom down there. Example: Built a house with no permits, drinks a beer while driving around town and no problem since he's friends with all the cops...etc.

Does he have the freedom to trap?

And there's the rub Turtle. Probably no place that I can think of you can continue a trapping lifestyle if you move to tropical or sub-tropical places. For my buddy it din't matter as he wasn't a trapper.

Fish and crab traps are a thing I would think. As well as mice and rats. Just a different kind of trapping. Probably a lot of good fishing as well

Tatiana, you probably should steer clear of the Dominican Republic. My folks were Peace Corps volunteer in a village close to the Hatian border. When mom felt sick and was bed ridden the neighbor women would crawl into bed with her and massage her back or comb her hair and say "Pobrecita Eva, que te sientas mejor!" (Poor Eva, hope you feel better!)

I did get to trap cottontail rabbits in my tree nursery in Ecuador!

Nope have no thoughts of leaving the states, in fact it takes some heavy thoughts about visiting out of the country to any where !

The only place I ever have given it any thought in my younger years was when I visited Australia, which at the time was pleasant enough to most Americans, doubt that much any more about most countries ! Stayed for a whole month and seen a lot of the place, great country and also rough in many parts !

They have a beautiful country and an awesome outdoors most any where. Travel is rough though as you have to go inside the country instead of around it where most of the humans live, to really enjoy their country.

Were friendly enough years ago, today have heard not so much !

There can be danger for sure, but the news intentionally puts fear into people.

A little more perspective: In many places of the world there are communities of ex-pat Americans. You don't even need to know much about the language or culture. You're living in a little America far from home. Cheaper than the US for the most part, but it has become increasingly more expensive. You may be able to move to the American South and live cheaper.

From 1983-85 I lived in Ecuador for $100 a month. (Peace Corps salary). I could have bought a house with a view of 7 waterfalls in the eastern Andes for about $800. Nine hour bus ride to Quito cost $3.00, Airplane $15 . Hotels (shared bathrooms) about $5. Bus stop meals $1.50

For someone on a fixed income third world living could be an answer if they aren't too close-minded culturally. You can hire a live in assistant for a few hundred dollars monthly if that is needed. My wife's Colombian family members all have maids and do none of their own cooking or cleaning. They aren't rich either.

You do need to be open minded about stuff though and that probably means a lot of folks would not fit in or like it abroad. There is a thing called culture shock. I actually experienced reverse culture shock on my return to the states in 1985. I had become immersed in Ecuadoran society, with all its many warts. "Gone native" we Peace Corps volunteers used to say.

"reverse culture shock" boy that fit me when I returned to the US in 1980 after 12 years. Good term, had to learn a lot about the then modern US......jk

I have worked in 5 countries for a few months at a time over the last 18yrs. Visited a few more and have seen my co workers relocate to various countries where your money is worth more. I have never stayed in a compound of any kind and always lived on the local economy. I have yet to see anyone actually plant roots and stay for very long. It could work out as a good Part time, snow bird type of arrangement, but the locals will rob your property while your gone. They may also move into your home and squat while your gone and the local government will do nothing to remove them. Being everyone here is obviously an outdoorsman, shooter, hunter and fisherman. You would also have to give up the hunting, trapping, and shooting part, just about everywhere that is "cheaper" to live. Unfortunately even with all of her problems The U.S. of A . Is still the best place. I have actually got on my knees and kissed the ground on one occasion returning "Home". My 2 cents

Boco, first time I was in Winnipeg was about '85.

It's a big city to a small town guy like me. They are all crap holes.

That sounds about like a Canadian women's hockey locker room.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Makes me want to check my locks, then go shower and scrub myself with stove cleaner and bleach, rinse, repeat.

I'm getting more than enough unwanted souvenirs from SE Asia anyway. Tiger mosquitoes appeared in our forests, and tourists bring back nasty viruses (one almost killed me, and killed the lady who brought it here) etc.

If I'm ever incapacitated, the plan is to, um, send myself to the farm. Nobody wants or needs me laugh

Doctors already saved me a couple of times and they shouldn't have, I would have been better off dead.

If I were pretty, I'd probably sell myself as a mail order bride to a grumpy sociophobe somewhere close to the polar circle and never go south of my current 54°N ever again.

I was born and raised in FLA. As a youngster, I don't recall the heat and humidity bothering me too much, but it still did. I would stand at times and gaze due north, dreaming of the day I would leave FLA . I knew where north was at a young age. The older I became, the more heat and humidity bothered me. Working horses in the hot part of summer was intolerable, for them too.

I saw my first snow in Hawaii, of all places. On top of Mauna Loa and Kea. The tallest mountains on earth from seafloor elevation. I was invited to go with a crew to build some houses on the big island. A nice experience for three years but I was glad being on the flight out of there.

I couldn't believe the relief in lack of humidity and heat when I experienced the northwest mountains. You're right, snow is bliss.

I will never live south again. PS....the docs did exactly right in helping you . PERIOD . wink
