Worked on powerlines for 37 years in Wyoming 50-80+mph winds are common anywhere east of the continental divide ( Rawlins, Casper, Douglas, Wheatland, etc. Have also seen winds that strong around Lander ( South Pass) the Cody foothills ( Meeteetse, Cody, Clark etc) Greybull, Worland, Thermopolis are nice little towns but hot in the summer Thermopolis has a hospital there not sure about the others but alot of my friends in that area were going to Billings for medical care. Lots of people cuss Rock Springs/ Green River but trapping wise it is surrounded by lots of BLM land once you get past the checkerboarded land. Flaming Gorge , Little Mountain and that area is awesome imo Baggs is another area I have been looking at you have the Sierra Madre Mountains to the east and Red Desert to the west all the way to Utah With trapping not allowed in Colorado I would think it would have a steady flow of coyotes migrating in although I think the government trappers work it hard .Craig Colorado is about 45 miles away for health care and shopping Last I knew the health clinic in Baggs was closed Buffalo, Sheridan,Gillette etc in the northeast part of the state are other places to consider but not near as much public land. Big Piney, Pinedale are good possibilities also but housing prices seem extremely high to me and everything is high in Wyoming

I know exactly where you took that picture, have one just like it in my phone. Treed a real nice tom lion for a hunter at the base of those rocks in the picture a few years ago. It had been all around a lady's house, walking under the eaves of the house and the garage, and even under her deck.

Two big problems with that country, price of land (still way lower than around here, but very high) and lack of public land/access. There just isn't that much accessible public land there.

I lived in Riverton for 8 years. I really didn’t want to leave, but kids and grandkids in Oregon. Riverton gets less wind and less snow than most of the rest of the state. Good shopping, hunting, fishing and trapping. They have a good hospital. A little short on doctors. Our doctors were in lander.
Lander is nice but realstate is quite a bit higher than Riverton. No state income tax, low property tax,
If I could get my wife to move back I would in a heartbeat

I spent a good bit of time around Lander. Did a 150 mile backpacking trip based out of Lander a few years back. It was a really nice area.

That being said, if I was moving to Wyoming tomorrow it would be somewhere around Powell

Just remember, anywhere with trees, the property values are going to be stupid.

Years ago I interviewed at Green River HS by Flaming Gorge. I remember asking if the wind blew like that all the time. The response was that it was not the wind blowing but that Utah sucks.

We love Laramie but not cheap to live and with the University you have to deal with some of those types every day. Summers are nice though, students are gone and usually not too hot. Mountains are 10 minutes or 30 minutes away with great hunting.

They wouldn't touch it for 14K an acre, about every animal lives there or uses the ranch except mountian goat & sheep.
Yep land is getting tough to buy for a decect price anymore.

I've known a few Wyoming guys who've moved to the Pacific Northwest. Everone of them thinks of themselves as big-time, expert, hunters. After a couple years trying to hunt in coastal rainforests (25-35 yard shots), they give up, and head back to Wyoming every hunting season.
One of these Wyoming guys fancies himself as a cowboy, we accuse him of gluing hay to his bumper so that he looks the part. Fun guys to tease.

I nicknamed it the devil’s anus. Cannot imagine climbing those hills!!! Muddy creek is in fact muddy.

I bought my place when I was 19 over a pay phone from where I was working in Idaho. I had never seen it but my Dad convinced me it was a good buy. He said "There are two things about land. They quit making it a long time ago and no one ever wishes they had less".

I have nothing clever to put here.

How long were you in Lathrop?
Used to live south of there in Excelsior Springs - high cost of living.

You got that right!!
So over 20 years ago now my son which is 40 bought 46 acres from a couple that had no children. The 46 acres has a quarter mile of Yellowstone River frontage. He had just graduated and I helped him buy it but it was dirt cheap and they gave him a great deal.

I agree buying land is a great investment. You did well 160 taking advantage of an opportunity at a young age. Good for you and a smart move.

I'm still trying to expand my place even at my age.
