We were short yesterday at the meat market, so I was running double duty, in the meat room and running the register.
Had a fella come in with a pint of fruit salad that we make in house..
I asked him if that was all he and he said “ ya” Kinda grumpy,,, and then I jokingly said “you sure? Lots of goodies here in the store “
He slammed the fruit salad on the counter and got mad and walked out..
I have absolutely no idea what made him mad.
There were other customers who looked at me who were shocked too at his reaction.

The boss was there and told me not to worry about it..
But wow!! That was a first time experience for me.

I try to be as pleasant and respectful to ALL customers and make conversations with them.
Which to tell you the truth.. I’m normally a shy person.
I was terrified to work a register when first started..something that was wayyyyy out of my comfort zone.
But, it’s turned out to be not so bad.

My sincere kudos to folks who have been working cash registers for years,,, they have undoubtedly seen a whole lot more than I have.

See that here in almost everyplace that sells things, think people just want to be left alone and do their thing !

Giving them time to formulate another answer is probably mind boggling !!

A lot of people don't like to be upsold at/too.

You said he said "Yeah" kind of grumpily. In that instance the upsale was not what he wanted.

I know you probably meant it as a light mannered thing. You just happened to be the straw that broke his camels back.

If the cashier is not friendly, I find a new store.

Years ago behind the counter of Kmart Sporting Goods two "youths" come up asking for 41 Smith and Wesson Magnum, exactly how they said it.

Well I explained that is a uncommon caliber and not everyone carries it and that we didn't.

Oh well, just give us some of that 44 magnum and we'll make it work.

He was probably just having a bad day and it didn't take much to push his limits. I wouldn't worry about it. It happens.

That attitude is exactly what was being discussed in another thread about Yankees.

Too much friendly is just too much. I don't want a long conversation, especially when they have it with the folks in front of me.

I have worked at gas station for my grandparents, back in high school.
I lasted about a year, I liked it but working with family can be tough.
It was a convenient store .
I wanted to learn meat cutting and kill floor work.
And got out of school to work it through a school program.
Learned alot glad I did it.

Let me sugar coat this

my guess , that was the up-sell straw that broke the camels back.
or that was going to take his every last dollar. which might be the same thing.

but as your boss pointed out , your fine , that little phrase will probably make more sales of things people were thinking off but didn't pick up than it upsets people to make no sale at all.
