A lot of great trappers you will never hear their names
Agreed. The thread mentions famous. There’s a few famous TV trappers out there that maybe aren’t the biggest numbers trappers or PhDs in wolf management, but they’re doing good things for our community.
There’s a lot of true legends out there, some are among us, that’ll never be famous. If you don’t know them, you can usually tell. Whether you’re up in Norway House or down in the south, when they speak, the crowd gets quiet.
To become a legend, you gotta listen. When someone is successful using a set that you adamantly swear against, shut up, pay attention instead of insulting the technique. You’re doing something wrong. Wait until after the demo or discussion, then ask why they do certain things, and mention the reasons why you don’t, you’ll come out with a bit of a new perspective.

Because, if you don't , you don't want people knowing all you know and all you catch. That invites trouble, especially when fur is bringing top dollar. The most 'famous' trapper, the guy who really made it big . . .in truth, never really was that great of a trapper. He never put up serious numbers of pelts , not Phil Brown numbers or Leggets. And why was that ? Because he didn't catch it. Oh, he can show YOU how to do it, just not do it himself.
And yet his name is plastered all over. Based on videos sold . . . on no more than a meager harvest.
You think about the men who put up serious numbers of skins, year after year, Not many of them have a collection of things to sell you, but some will , ( and yes, I know Phil Brown now has a video to sell you)
Many of us grew up in an era where trappers didn't blab their secrets to everyone for free. But along came the internet and money, big money . . .and everybody wants to be a star !
Many of the best trappers are not in print . . .
* Craig O'Gorman may be an exception, but then. . .he had something to sell !

Ace was great. Johnny thorp was at best a good marketer
No, he had a lot of knowledge about a lot of topics, including trapping, of course. It's one thing to read a person's ads, another to see what they actually do in the woods.
Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.
Some guys got famous because they are good at promoting themselves and theres some really great trappers that aren't known by alot of people. Not everyone can tell a great trapper from a great salesman.
