In conversation recently, I used the term leg hold. It got me some looks.

When, exactly, did we go from leg hold to foot hold? Who made that change?

Thanks.

Say what you will but it doesn't matter what term you use to appease the anits. You're not going to appease them no matter what term you use. Technically animals don't have feet, they have paws. So maybe call it a paw hold.

Mark June addressed this very thing on Facebook when someone called him out about using the term leghold. I thought he handled it quite well. He said something fairly close as what to I stated above.

Antis kept alluding to broken legs...that is what caused the change. Took me time to get used to it, but I'm there now.

I remember a few different trappers that wrote articles and or book authors too back in the 1980's that made the suggestion of using foothold because of what Bogmaster mentioned about antis. I was just in my teens back then but it made sense to me back then and I just started saying/writing foothold and it became habit.

Made the switch back in the 80s. Easier to roll off the tongue once you make the change, especially when confronting antis and/or explaining trapping to politicians who will decide whether or not we continue with all the tools we have in the pack basket.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

If we call the foot a paw, are we on paw patrol?

The same people who think it's politically incorrect to say "leg hold" probably also say "harvest" instead of "kill" to keep from offending somebody.

Who cares.

Those still on the fence about trapping care! I feel the same way, but Boss Paul countered with his Daddy always said leghold and that's good 'Nuff for him.

Correct. Like anti-trappers will suddenly be on our side if everybody starts saying foot hold.

So . . . just out of curiosity. . . how many times have you been to your state capitol to defend trapping?

Paw restraining device.
A little wordy, but pretty dadgum accurate.
A fur trapper, of all people want a catch to be as calm and undamaged as possible when they check their sets.

Kind of on your high horse there Muskrat. I distinctly remember Paul posting on here that he calls them leg hold traps, just like his dad did, (unless he's changed over the years since posting that) because he targets beaver and that is exactly how he likes to catch them, and Paul has done more through this website and other ways for trapping than likely anyone else on here. I tend to call them footholds myself, but it's the way I talk I guess because I'm not and never will be PC. I fully believe there is no speech, PC or otherwise, that will effect the anti-trappers agenda. If they don't actually read it or see it for themselves, they will make it all up anyway.
