My 2 grandsons started riding about that same age. They rode all through high school when ever there was an event near home. We dont have a high school rodeo program though. It was all on their own, They both qualified to ride in the jr. finals rodeo in Vegas. Which they did ride there. and I might add, yes they did both break some bones during their riding.

I would say he has already done it without anyones permission. A young person could be doing a lot worse at that age then riding a bull. It happens a lot more than people realize. Mom and dad say no and won't sign permission slips required for any legitimate competition, training clinic, or even a back yard prsctice pen.
So the kid behaves until one of his buddies calls or texts saying hey we got 3 or 4 braimer cross bulls in a pen down here at the salebarn but we are almost out of booze. Grab some more and meet us out here we are going to buck them til they stop buckin!
Don't ask me how I know this.

I spoke with the rodeo people today and they said that he couldn't just sign up and ride.
I told him if it was something he wanted to do i would find a clinic even if it was 6 hrs away and take him but he declined. Said he only wanted to do it if he could here and not something he wanted to sign up annd spend a lot of time and money for.
Sounds like he was misinformed or misunderstood what the people were saying that said all he had to do was sign up to ride.

They are around. I have a good friend here that runs a rodeo company. He puts on a couple clinics a year, holds a rodeo every Saturday night all summer and runs a practice pen most Sundays weather permitting. If you can find someone like him in your area that would be a good place to start.

I dont understand those that are so against others taking a little risk if they want to. Definitely not the attitude that made this country what it is. Its the same mind set the freaks out about a young kid out hunting alone. The mind set that hovers wont give kids a chance to not only do things but a chance to fail.. learn and try again. Beyond just learning actions have consequences . I believe it and single parent households big reason a large majority of the youth and young adults in our country are the way they are. Vs the free range latch key generation.

The main difference in letting a young kid hunt alone and getting on a bull, is that someone else can get shot. When you get on a bull it is just you that can get hurt. When a kid is out there with a gun, there is not telling who or what will get shot.

10,000 kids will take up rodeo rough stock this year. 1/3 won't do two rodeos. In 5 years a half dozen will have money. However, get any old guy who rode in his youth, made money or not, kept at it a few years, and his eyes will sparkle and shine remembering when.

Let him ride! Let my 7yr old ride a few and I hopped on a bull for the first time at age 30. It’s a weighty decision because if they get hooked on rodeo they’re bound to get injured. Which doesn’t feel right. Ya wanna protect your kids. But I think it’s worth the risk. All the great things in life have some risk. It builds courage and endurance. And for all the drunken foolishness in the rodeo community, it’s still better than most of the sports community. Name another sport where the whole crowd prays over their athletes. None. NASCAR does.
