Regardless of the recipe you decide to use, I strongly suggest you set the pan of beans under a well-seasoned, slow roasting/smoking pork shoulder on the grill so the drippings flavor your beans.

Add tomato after beans cooked to not toughen them. Cranberry beans instead of or mixed with navy beans

Do the same when making chili. Smoke your hamburger on a rack above the pot containing the rest of your ingredients.

I dont really go by a recipe on baked beans. Add enough ketchup to get the volume you want then add enough brown sugar till the color of the ketchup gets to a mahogany color. If you dont like em that sweet then you can back off on the brown sugar.

Yes Sir that is a fine recipe. I would bet with 4 different types of beans the next day would be interesting. It looks like it would surely Tune your Guitar.

Amazing that nobody is going scratch for baked beans. Wasn't that the point from the OP?

I'm pretty sure you're supposed to start with 1 lb of bacon but only 1/2 makes it to the beans.

Hey Nessy. In your recipe... you stick that onion in there whole??? That's what I thought but the comment about layering threw me. Also, I don't have a fancy New England bean pot. Reckon a dutch oven would work as well?

Yes on the Dutch

Yes...whole onion...just peel it and leave the root end on..

That way there, it won't fall apart...when removed.

Yup the layering is confusing...lol

Just layer the cubed up salt pork.

And Nevah ..Evah...stir the beans until done.

Also ... always cook these in the oven....a crock pot doesn't cut it.

ATK is pretty good at what they do as far as recipes and equipment testing. Only thing they are off on sometimes is ingredient levels as sometimes they need either upped or reduced.
