scope mount order headache.

MOA pic rail is a taper built into the rail to let you get more elevation adjustment from your scope. This is used for long range varmint and match shooting. A normal hunting rifle would not have any benefit.

Are you dialing up 1000 meter shots or longer? Do you need to add more elevation to your scope to dial up long distances because you don't have enough travel for your reticle? If you said NO to either of these, just go with a standard level rail

Hello All,
What caliber firearm are we talking about?
I installed an after market compensated rail/mount on my model 60 Marlin in .22 cal.
cause I ran out of elevation adjustment on my Leupold scope.
It's pitched downhill .007 - .015 thousands of an inch to get me on paper
at 100 yards.
It seems that the lesser expensive firearms don't have very good alignment
between receiver and barrel.

Most the experts disagree but I put a high mount on a 50mm Obj L on a Marlin lever 45-70 and can use my open sites under the scope when I want to. I can 0 the scope at say 100 yards and 0 the open sites at 40. For me that alone is benefit enough to ignore the nay sayers.

Confidence is huge.
Low, level, and less rainbow for me.

Many on the web seem like Hathcock students.
I do have his old 22.

No, but one just like it.

I think scopes got shorter.
Millet was my go to.
Now I'm looking at rail set ups.
All part of the fun, I guess lol.

Don't know what your using the gun for but my first question is do you NEED a rail. If your trying to keep the scope low and not planning on taking the scope off occasionally and aren't shooting long range where you need the extra moa, you may not need the rail.

0 MOA on a pic rail means it is flat to the barrel.

20 MOA on a pic rail means that it is 20 minutes or 1/3 of a degree up angle so that you can dial out further for elevation.

as an example say you want to stretch a 308 to 1000 yards for fun . your optic has 60moa of adjustment but half of it is above and half below , now you tilted your optic 20 moa so you get more like 50moa above and your crosshair at a 200 yard zero

1moa = 1/60th of a degree

When I first went from Millet mounts and rings to rail was,
BECAUSE,
the scope went bad,
got sent in,
was replaced by them with a SHORTER scope
that would not adjust to eye relief in Millet mounts because it is shorter.

Back in the day it was ONE scope, mounts, rings lived on that rig.
Leupold changed the program for me.

At that time I could walk into a shop and buy
the hardware.
Now I guess I will order/mail
back and forth until I get the height and fit.
Learning rail MOA helps that aspect.

I hope this explains the question to my question.
If there is an easier way I'm all ears.

scopes have definitely changed and that means changing mounting

here is a good example a 760 with a old 2-7 weaver
[Linked Image]

a 742 with current 2-7 vortex
[Linked Image]

both get mounted nearly the same distance back , but the newer style mount and dimensions of the scope to get it far enough back was harder.
