I've got green beans and butter beans that just won't produce. The vines are healthy and look good, but blooms are scarce. I figure something is missing in the soil, but I'm not sure what. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Could be a number of things....too much nitrogen, too much heat, not enough sunlight, too much water...

Could be too much water. We've gotten a lot of rain. It's only been a problem the last few years. We tried spacing the plants out a little more this year, but it doesn't appear to have made a difference. Heat hasn't been too bad up to this point.

I just tilled my green beans under two weeks ago. . I was wore out from picking them. Put up over 100 packs in the freezer. SW Arkansas. I always consider green beans a late spring producer. I till mine under mid June and plant peas.

High levels of nitrogen will produce lots of leafy growth, but will harm bean production.

Friend said the blossoms were falling off his beans because of the heat. Maybe that is your problem.

I wonder that myself. Peas and beans grow good. Okra okay. Corn, squash, tomatoes - not so much

Two main offenders are heat and lack of potassium.
Nitrogen = green leaf growth
Potassium = flowering
Phosphorus = root growth
Boron = fruit / seed set (affects head size for cabbage and Broccoli/Cauliflower also affects tomatoes.)
Copper Sulfate = leaf size (lack of it causes smaller leaves.)

Good post Rye. Throw unlock the PH in there.

We had a decade of Miracle Grow madness
and determinate "tomato blight".
Many would ask, but few would listen.

I started drying and then grinding my egg shells then put in what, 1/8 cup in the hole when bedding the plants(I start my green beans in trays first). Ground egg shells are Huge for producing lots of blossoms.

The Beaver and the Bear will show the way.
