Hello. So these wonderful new bugs started showing up here about 5 years ago. I had heard of them before their arrival. Question: What has worked to kill/keep them off of apple/peach/cherry trees? Thank you for your time.

Turkey, I have been using the traps for the Japanese pests. I only have to deal with them on our landscape plants. No, they are not 100% effective, but they keep the damage to a minimal level. I only have to hang them once and not have to do repeated sprays. You can find them on Amazon or probably Walmart. I've wondered about the milky spore treatment on the yard, but I'm not sure how it would affect beneficials like earthworms.

We don't have them here but I've heard that the traps are so effective at calling them from far that they can actually hurt you more than help.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

About 10 years ago, we were overrun by swarms of them. Over time, they have dwindled. I suspect it is a case of them outrunning natural controls in the ground......like milky spore. But until then, they are a problem. We tried a lot of things.....like the traps......on an industrial scale. Replaced the little plastic bags with 30 gallon trash cans and 5 gallon buckets. And filled those daily. Nasty stuff when they die and start stinking up the place.I can remember seeing rivers of them coming from the horizon headed to the traps. Then clouds of them swarming around the traps, which would fill a 5 gallon bucket twice a day.

Sevin, permethrin and some synthetic nicotine products work on them on fruit trees and ornamentals. We went route of only spraying the nicotine products on the trees we wanted to protect and let them go at it elsewhere. The nicotine product is systemic in the plant leaf.......last weeks and does not wash off in the rain. The easy spray on leaf version is acemitaprid, but nearly impossible to find now. Root pour on is available.......not sure how effective that is......yet. I have some.........haven't tried it......yet.

Chickens will eat them for a while........but can't even make a dent in the big picture. If one had access to running water like a decent sized creek, they could be lured with traps to drop into the water to let the fish eat them. Won't work in ponds or lakes...........they will overwhelm the resident fish.......then create big rolling balls that eventually spread into slick that blows around for days....another nasty mess.

The one thing we never tried, but think might work.......is to find a remote sacrificial tree or plant......something they really like..........then use the heavy duty root deliver nicotine product to protect the tree..........then put a trap pellet in that tree. Would be drawn to the tree........which kills them........and they drop to the ground way out there somewhere where huge piles of them won't matter.

True, buy traps and give
them to your neighbors a half mile down the road

Not to be confused with Ladybugs, these little stinkers bite! The traps I've used only work so-so. Spring and fall is when they seem to show up the most often.

Any brand with Carbaryl in it. They are dead within less than 5 minutes if you hit them with it and it has good residual control for a few days. Used to be the main ingredient in "Seven". You can also just buy straight Carbaryl that is what we use in our nursery. We just like to spot spray where they are they congregate in mass to feed and do the deed. No need to wipe out your beneficial insects on a wide scale. You can also knock the beetles into a bucket of soapy water if you can reach them. Kills them that way as well.

I think you are confusing Asian lady beetles with Japanese beetles.
