We have a bunch around here, several colonies, They pretty much stick to themselves unless they are trying to sell you things, By and large they are alright but some of their business is shady, their wine is fruit juice with some alchohol added, if they run low on produce they go to Costco or Sam's and buy from there to resell. See them in Walmart and such all the time.

Those of us that have grown up south of Minnesota will read Hutts but northerners pronounce it as Hoots. Often shortened to hoots as referring to the hutterites up north.

I never realized Missouri was deep south (according to North Dakotans) until I lived up there as I always figured there were 2 states north of me and 2 states south of me.........North Dakotans pretty much figure everyone south of them are deep south........

You betcha and ehhhh are for real and I never knew what a "hot dish" was as we called it casserole..........

I never observed a lazy Hutterite, never. For that matter I can't say I have observed lazy Amish, Mennonites, or Hutterites - work ethic should be modelled by many other Americans.

I don’t know, might be the intention and good for the colony. They’re probably pregnant by the time they get the dress dried out.

A few years ago we were pulling the distribution line off their property at their request. Knocked on the door to the main place to give them an heads up that we’d be on their land for a few hours, and a smoking hot mid 20ish girl comes to the door! I forgot what I was even doing there for a sec……lol

Was her dress still drying in the bushes?

A friend of mine lives near Great Falls and has pointed out one of their farms which was well kept, but he says when they go into town they are followed by store clerk because they are known for shop lifting according to him. He said they are banned from some retail stores.

My experience was a little different. As much as they were a self contained colony, they didn’t like following laws. I remember the problems Mower County, Minnesota, had trying to get them to put in septic systems. The Hudderites liked to flush everything into an open pond. And, of course, it overflowed with big rains. If you were downstream of these ponds, well, you get the idea.

Yea, they kinda do things until they’re told not to or pay up. The trout pond one north of me was buying coyotes during the boom. They had no fur buyers licence. The old Sargent CO here went and brought them the FB application form to fill out at a $27 fee……..no charges.

There are 6 colonies within a hundred miles of where I live in Eastern Washington. I have contracted painting work from a colony near Warden Wa for over 15 years. If you do quality work, they are very loyal and pay very well and on time. Unlike the Amish, Hutterites embrace technology and have the latest and most efficient farm implements made. They eat every meal communally except for Sunday evenings. When they get married, the bride always moves to the husbands colony, many young hutterites around here, get their spouses from Canada. Many of the women have dual citizenship. It costs roughly $12,000 and two years to attain US citizenship. I take many of them walleye fishing and in return they are always ready to help me with any project I need help with. Their Christian beliefs are taught and instilled in their youths early on and like any group, some are more committed than others. Overall, they are good hardworking, intelligent people and I find it highly offensive that a low IQ tman member would suggest they are commies in the order of Stalin.

Interesting stuff cat daddy. I was curious if the communal living would possibly lead to inbreeding issues over the years, but from what you say it sounds like they work around that. Do they ever recruit new members who were not born into their faith?

Btw, I think it takes three years before a foreigner can naturalize after marriage to a US citizen.

I believe the first Hutterites immigrated to Canada from Germany. Is that right?

Well said. Amish around here are very good people. I wish our English kids behaved like the Amish kids.

From what I’ve seen Carl, there aren’t anymore birth defects than in the general population. Usually at 130 to 150 members the colony starts thinking about splitting. The mother colony will help purchase land and get the infrastructure started for the new colony, after about three years, the new colony assumes autonomy. There are many more colonies in Canada than in the US. My understanding is that Jacob Hutter was originally in Russia. He was martyred being hung with his own belt which is one reason you see Hutterites wearing suspenders in lieu of belts. They eventually move from Russia to Germany and the to North America.

. I’m still laughing about the communism comment made earlier. I’ve never been around Hutterites but the Amish I know aren’t exactly “big government” types with their gardens, raw milk, cottage businesses, unplated buggies, midwives, off grid living, private parochial schools, cash economy and pretty much zero government conscription on anything and zero government handouts. Yep sounds pretty commie to me.

They came from all over “Eastern Europe” and Russia. I got Eastern Europe in quote because the areas they came from has changed names and borders for thousands of years.
I’m not related to any Hutts, but both sides of my family followed a similar path for the same reasons. G G Grandparents left Russia for Prussia, then to what is now Eastern Ukraine, then over to Holland and finally Canada. They left Canada for Mexico because of the weather, but some loaded up the wagons and thankfully came back north. Some of my distant Mexican cousins are bat S crazy. Nothing like the level headed fella that’s typing this out.

All the ones around here that I know of are of German stock. They own 10s of 1000s of acres and many businesses. Hard workers, especially the women who have to decide their jobs early on, some cook, some sew. Many run side hustles as known incomes go to the collective. Not my cup of tea.

Lots of Hutterites in Saskatchewan. I have two colony’s by my trapping cabin. One at 5 miles the other 11 miles away. Two totally different colony’s. One has hard working , great people. Easy to do business with. The other one not so great. Like any other kind of group , lots of good and lots of bad people, you just have to sort them out.

The colony that is not so great got formed 15 years ago. They sent all the misfits from a bunch of different colony’s and formed a new one. They struggled when they started and were very sketchy and not trustworthy. The last five years they have turned a corner and are running it 10 times better and settled down their bad apples.

I could tell hundreds of good and bad stories after dealing with both colony’s for the last 40 years. One was there before I was alive and the newest one. Usually when they are ready to find a mate they load up a van load and head to another colony in a different province. Usually the male stays at his colony and the female moves.

Used to take out a preachers son when I was in high school. Had a change of clothes and he would go party with us. We would drop him off 1/2 miles from the colony when we were done for the night and he would walk home. He is now the preacher on the same colony and still a very good friend.

Hutterites around me will not own a car ( van or truck)quads , snowmobile or own guns or hunt. They will trap. Years ago they went even allowed to have a radio in any vehicle or farm equipment. They have embraced technology quite a few years back and are better on a computer than I’ll ever be. They run sheet metal company’s and all kinds of businesses on the colony’s now. Some have contracts for mass production of all kinds of things in the city.

I asked one day how they decide what the young males are going to do on the colony. Depending on your standing on the colony is what you do. If you are going to start with pigs , you learn from the bottom and after a few years you know everything about raising pigs to how the barn functions and so on. If you’re a field guy you learn everything about every piece of equipment , grain fertilizer etc. usually stay in the same area your whole life.

Interesting life and 90% of the earnings go right back into the colony and infrastructure. Most colony’s here are some of the biggest land owners wherever they set up.

My best joke about them is when I confront them about something they
say no no no that was the other boy laugh

My Dad use to use there services on anything that he didn't want to do.
Just knock money off the propane bill.
Traded some old above ground gas tanks to them for beef meat.
Big tanks that they cut in half for hog huts.

Pretty common name's Hoffer, Kleinsaucer, Wipf and Decker around
here anyway.

Let me sugar coat this
