How scarce farm labor being caused by farm owners not paying a decent wage which causes illegals to be hired which in turn results in disease out breaks. Fixed it for you.

Hey Rat...what's a decent wage? Around here if you pay federal minimum wage you get..............zero workers. We don't even get a sniff from eligible field workers for less than $20 an hour.

Probably so. I did see though that that president you hate so much got the price you need to pay for legal mescins significantly lowered this year and even now allows you to charge partially for housing.

State minimum wage is twice what federal is. Over here you can hire all the people you want for 20 dollars an hour. On your side of the mountain wages are higher and with the higher price you receive for your products over there 25 to 30 dollars an hour should be doable and fair with an 8 hour day.

Federal minimum wage is a joke and you know it. Can't imagine anyone over the age of 14 willing to work for that. Why would anyone want to pick berries for that when they can work in the AC asking "Would you like fries with that?" for $12+????

You can legally pay an entry-level H-2A worker $13.14/hour

minimum wage for OR. is around 15 dollars an our. You can get a job driving a spud truck for 24 dollars per hour with all the hours you want. If you want good help you have too be willing to pay for it.

I'll just wait for the end of the thread to see how y'all have figured out my life for me. Thanks!

....Hopefully the solution is good enough that I don't have to trap beaver all winter long to put food on the table.

If you dig around in the DOL website it will list the required wage rate by state or at least it use to. I thought the coastal commie states of CA/OR/WA were around $17 but not something I've looked at lately. And thinking about it the rate is likely higher there as i'm about 99% certain I was recently told Mi is $18 and some change

It was reduced this year by the Trump administration though.

Thanks for the response. I assume you're talking about the current-day H-2A visa program (not the Bracero program that ended in the 1960s)? Would it be viable for small farms to pool their resources to pay for housing?

Where are the illegal immigrant workers living right now?

Around here every store and fast food joint has had help wanted signs out since the beginning of Covid, starting wages I see posted are around $20/hr, and they are all shorthanded. Nobody wants work when they can get paid for not working. Child labor laws are one of the worst things that happened to this country. The way they are nowadays, kids can't hardly get a legal job, if they want to work enough to actually earn a significant amount it has to be under the table. And now we have laws so they can go to school and not have to work, and be provided with health care until they are 26. By the time they do join the work force, they don't know how to work, nor are they willing to put in the effort to learn.

I figure we should cut all the "welfare" programs, there are a lot of them. Sure there would be a few people get hurt, but that is what charity used to be for. Charity has pretty much disappeared in the US, because the government will pay anybody in need (and a whole lot who aren't) so people quit donating to it.

As far as immigrant workers, legal and illegal. I'll address that when I have more time, gotta head out the door now.

I paid guys $25/hour to drag brush to a truck and could not find help. The government handouts are too generous for people to be serios about full-time employment.

You brought it up, and have yet to offer any solutions.

One of our contractors hired two natives in their late teens from Berens River IR to haul brush to the chipper. Super hard workers, constantly running up and down the slopes hauling branches up. They have a cigarette break ever hour or so and their boss tells them to get moving…..and I tell him to let them have a break, they earned it…..lol.

When you guys get the squirts from this thing, is it one and done in a violent hour, or does it last a few days?
