The poverty/deficit version of soda from my childhood was black tea-based kombucha. Pepsi was for birthdays.

If you like fermenting and marginally useful pets you'll like it. And they say it's very healthy.

My wife makes ginger beer. She bought more ginger yesterday. You can add what ever you want to flavor it. She made some with pineapple once, but she likes the plain ginger beer more. It is not hard to make, just a process.

I played with it a little several years ago but never got big into it. May start again making some healthier drinks than soda. smile

This site has some good info and recipes about it. https://www.fermentingforfoodies.com/catching-ginger-bug/

Actually I meant to ask you about something! Do you have any experience with. Drink called kavass ? Think that's how it's spelled . Saw a video about it while looking at some brewing stuff and thinking. About trying to make some

It's a staple here.

There are quite a few brands that you can find in most stores. Plus in beer stores where they sell beer from big kegs, they almost always have kvas and 1-2 types of soda.

In the Soviet times, it was usually sold in the streets in the summer from big yellow metal barrel trailers, there was usually a lady in a white coat selling it, and she had a tray of big glass mugs, of the kind they serve beer in, of 2 sizes and smaller glasses. They still sell it from barrels in the streets and along highways, except now it's plastic cups and bottles.

Some people make their own, the simplest rural version is based on dried diced leftover rye bread and some raisins. There are also premade mixes available, either dried or bottled (malt-based). The industrial version is rye malt-based, and is usually darker and more carbonated that homemade kvas.

We use it to make okroshka, too (some use kefir or mineral water instead of kvas, but never trust people who do that, they have no soul).

Took this picture for you yesterday.
