I have a customer that lives in an old farmhouse with dirt/bedrock basement floor. She wants to put in a sump pump. Suggestions on approach, demo saw and jack hammer?

Dug a hole in basement floor. Put in 5 gallon pail in hole. Plastic lid on pail with small holes drilled in lid. Pump in pail with auto valve. Works.

That’s the approach I would take.

Might be better, with a plastic, garbage can. or something similar. would give a larger volume of water before pump started. less cycling of pump. old 243

Guys, I think Mike is asking how to get the hole in bedrock. I’m pretty sure he knows how to install a liner.

Dirt and bedrock are two different things. If it was rock proper, and you had to have a hole the size of a 5gal bucket i would rent a concrete chain saw. Cut a perimeter, then grid it out a bit. You can used a splitting wedge to start to break the rock sort of like when you kerf a board a bunch and clear it with a claw hammer.

Concrete drill bit works, drill a bunch of holes and chip it out with a brick chisel.

Doug is correct. Floor is bed rock with some loose dirt here and there. I'm using the demo saw tomorrow to see if I can grid out a 2x2 pattern for a sump. If that works, the jack hammer will be put to work.

Wow, that sounds like a bugger of a job. Why would you need a sump pump in rock??

Old farmhouse and the last big rainstorm put 24" of rain in the basement with no where to go. The upstairs now smells musty.

Don’t plug the pump into a GFI circuit because it may trip at the wrong time.
