I’ve been teaching my grandkids and some Trail Life youth a few trapping techniques out of some of Charlie Dobbins books. Looking to recreate his process on page 90 of Land Sets and Trapping Techniques. He mentions S.F.E and I’m drawing a blank in my research of that as there’s an F.S.E. And an S.F.E. mentioned in the book.

I’ll see Paul at our Ga Trappers Association convention in September and suppose I could see him on this then, but my granddaughter is pinning her hopes on doing this post set variation as her presentation for the Youth events.

Any insights you may have on S.F.E. Or F.S.E. would be greatly appreciated.

I have used what we called Synthetic Fermented Egg tablets in scent post surveys of fur bearing animals. I am pretty sure they were actually the FAS as I was working as a biologist for the Feds and we ordered them from the Pocatello Depot

The USDA APHIS Pocatello Supply Depot (PSD) located in Pocatello, Idaho, historically manufactures and distributes specialized fatty acid scent (FAS) and plaster-based scent survey tablets used for wildlife and carnivore monitoring, which were derived from fermented egg research. While liquid synthetic fermented egg (SFE) is widely sold commercially as a trapper's lure, official scent tabs/tablets tied to the original federal research formulations are managed directly through the depot

Thank you so MUCH for pointing me in a good direction, WhiteCliffs. We’ve followed your information and now have several resources. Many, many thanks!

Ive heard the same thing. Ive played with it and its not something everyone should be playing with especially kids. And honestly it has some use in formulations but very little use as a single attraction in my opinion.

So the OP mentioned FSE? Anyone know what that is?

As for the last couple comments, EVERYTHING is a carcinogen!! Give your kid a bottle of whiskey, a pack of marlboros and a bottle of SFE and tell em to kill some crap. No one lives forever.

I know nothing about this. Never even heard of SFE before. But "fermented" egg smells like sulfur to me.I wonder what a spoonful of sulfur would do.

SFE ( Synthetic Fermented Egg ) has been around for some time. It is a very potent caustic ( fluid ) and can be harmful to those not trained or skilled in its safe use and handling. Certainly not recommended for exposure to children or those not educated on the material.

Look up the MSDS sheet on the product. I would look for other alternatives.

Bob Js fermented egg formula does not smell like sulfur to me.
One time he leaked out the recipe,
I used foraged duck eggs and was pleasantly surprised.
Sounded gross, smelled great.
I had more confidence with this than
synthetics or Asian goat farts.

Asa spoke of cancer causing stuff on here too.

I honestly didn't find sfe that overly attractive as a single ingredient. There of formulated lure that have a stronger response for your desired reaction.

The tablets we used from the pocatello depot were much better at attracting wildlife than the couple of fermented egg extracts I have tried while trapping
